*The Max-Planck-Institute for Biogeochemistry Jena* is inviting
applications for
*Head of the Stable Isotope Laboratory (BGC IsoLab)*
The BGC IsoLab is home to 13 mass spectrometers and corresponding sample
preparation systems, many of them having been developed or modified at the
institute. We also have a growing number of laser-based isotope
instruments. The major tasks of BGC IsoLab are to support research at the
institute through reliable measurements of stable isotope signatures from
all kinds of materials, and to assist in the development of new methods for
biogeochemical research.
Current capabilities include:
- measurements of O2/N2, and isotopes in CO2 and CH4 in air samples at the
highest possible levels of precision and accuracy, as required for global
sampling networks. BGC IsoLab also currently has the function of a
WMO-Central Calibration Laboratory
- continuous flow IRMS measurements using a range of interfaces to measure
CO2, bulk organic or compound specific (gas or liquid
chromatography)separations(13C, 15N,18O and 2H)
- Water samples, analyzed with the Picarro CRDS or with a TC/EA-ConFlo IRMS
We welcome additions to this portfolio in line with scientific questions
arising within the departments of the Max-Planck Institute for
Biogeochemistry.
Further information about the lab is available at

The specific tasks of this position are
- to manage the operation of the BGC IsoLab and its 4 employees
- to continue the development and optimization of analytical systems as
needed for new and ongoing projects in the institute
-to maintain the high standards of QA-QC-procedures required for
interpreting isotope data, including the special requirements for
integrating the laboratory into the international greenhouse gas monitoring
communit
The successful candidate holds a Ph.D. in physics, chemistry or comparable
qualification with a proven background in stable isotope analysis and
applications. We expect experience in the design and testing of analytical
systems and in the day-to-day operation of high-precision stable isotope
analysis. A profound knowledge of sample preparation and methods for stable
isotope analysis is necessary. Practice in heading a laboratory and skills
in data management are advantageous for a successful job application. The
position requires team spirit, personal engagement and organizational and
managerial skills. The candidate should be interested in scientific
challenges and international collaboration and should have a corresponding
record of publications.
Good English language skills are a must, working knowledge of German will
