Job Description:
SSAI is seeking a GEOS-5 Land Modeling and Data Assimilation System
specialist to support the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office at the
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The work location is in Greenbelt, MD.
The positionis designed for a mid-career scientist/programmer or
numerical modeler with commensurate experience using and/or running
coupled atmosphere and land models. The selected staff member will
serve as integrator or “gate keeper” for land model and data
assimilation system development at the NASA Global Modeling and
Assimilation Office (GMAO). This implies the following expected duties:

Become the subject matter expert in development and documentation of
the NASA GEOS-5 land modeling and data assimilation system.

Integrate science software and model parameters developed by GMAO
science staff into the operational GEOS-5 system and perform
associated tests.

Assist in solving daily technical problems (as opposed to strictly
scientific problems).
*
Ensure proper coordination with other model development groups in
the GMAO.
*
Maintain appropriate standards and interfaces to facilitate coupling
of Land-Atmosphere-Ocean models in the broader NASA GEOS-5 system.
Required Qualifications:
A minimum of a BS degreein numerical land, atmospheric, or ocean
modeling or a related field and 8 years of relevant experience
is required for this position, or an equivalent combination of education
and professional experience.
Desired Qualifications:
A Master's Degree is strongly preferred. Applicants should possess 5-10
years of experience in designing, running, and analyzing output from
standalone or coupled land, atmosphere, or ocean numerical models or
data assimilation systems. Extensive experience in FORTRAN programming
is required. The applicant must be very detail-oriented. Experience in
Python programming is highly desired, as is familiarity with relevant
data formats (including NetCDF and HDF) and object-oriented software
paradigms (e.g., ESMF). Expert knowledge of parallel computing
processes and languages is also desired.
