*As a Geographer within the Core Science Systems Office, some of your 
specific duties will include:*

  * Leads project team to develop a nationally recognized platform that
    uses geospatial technology and techniques combined with data
    applications to describe, visualize, and deliver USGS scientific
    data and information.
  * Provides and applies expertise in science data management lifecycle
    and research project lifecycle to lead vision, implementation, and
    project management for a science data and information platform for
    the Bureau.
  * Serves as an expert on scientific, technical, and technological
    protocols and methodologies for the acquisition/collection,
    processing, integration, and dissemination of spatially oriented
    scientific data.
  * Leads, presents, or attends workshops, discussion groups,
    conferences, and symposia, to improve awareness, determine
    requirements, educate and promote Bureau-wide science data
    application and Core Science Analytics, Synthesis and Libraries
    program of work.

USGS has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for 
telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor 
approval. The official worksite for the selectee is the duty location

In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of 
specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the 
Federal service. Examples include:

*For GS-12:*

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, 
applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:

**One year of appropriate professional experience in geography that is 
equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience may include: 1) assembling information 
concerning the location and nomenclature of physical and cultural 
phenomena covering an area the size of Canada, and making determinations 
in the more difficult cases regarding location and nomenclature to 
appear on a map, etc. to insure standardization of such information; 2) 
compiling and synthesizing geographic data to show and compare the 
distribution of various features and events; 3) performing analytic and 
interpretive work concerned with determining and explaining the 
interrelationships existing between or among two or three varieties of 
phenomena. Examples 1 & 2 required a high degree of independence in 
planning and carrying out the assignments, selecting the approach or 
methodology to be used, resolving most of the conflicts that arose, and 
coordinating the work with others as necessary. The work usually 
involved established methods and conventional techniques and involved 
assisting in or partial responsibility for changing and modifying 
established procedures and precedents. Example 3 required independence 
in the execution of the research process, except for conferring with the 
supervisor at intermediate stages to assure that the approaches taken 
were effective and sound.

*For GS-13:*

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, 
applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-13 level:

**One year of appropriate professional experience in geography that is 
equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Examples 
of such experience may include: 1) serving as a recognized expert on the 
location and nomenclature of all physical and human features regarded as 
significant for navigational, intelligence, logistic and general 
geographical use; 2) responsibility for a comprehensive descriptive 
study of significant geographical aspects of a major nation state, e.g. 
Brazil, involving the bringing together of numerous available facts and 
their presentation; 3) publication of papers dealing with problems, 
findings, or determinations which are recognized as having considerable 
significance in the field; 4) performing analytical and interpretive 
assignments of considerable significance and complexity; 5) designing 
and creating GIS databases. For examples 1-5, the work involved 
collaborating with superiors in planning future projects and making 
recommendations as to the feasibility of proposed projects and the 
necessity for new phases of existing projects. Apart from program 
policy, formal guidelines did not exist
