CIRES/CSD RA Atmospheric Chemistry*
University of Colorado-Boulder, CO
Posting Description
The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences ( CIRES
) at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a postdoctoral
researcher to study atmospheric chemistry using field measurements from
instrumented research aircraft. The successful applicant will work in
the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – Earth System
Research Laboratory/Chemical Sciences Division ( NOAA ESRL / CSD ).
The researcher will work closely with a team of federal and CIRES
scientists responsible for aircraft instrument integration, field
deployment, and analysis of the resulting atmospheric data. Primary
scientific responsibilities will focus on carrying out, interpreting,
and publishing findings from reactive nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2, and NOy)
and ozone (O3) measurements taken on the 5-year Atmospheric Tomography
(ATom) mission funded under the NASA Earth Venture Suborbital-2 program.
ATom uses the DC-8 research aircraft to collect in-situ gas and aerosol
measurements, along near-continuous vertical profiles from the marine
boundary layer to 12 km altitude, over the course of 4 pole-to-pole
circumnavigations in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans between 2015 and
2019 (see illustration below).
The appointment will start no earlier than April of 2015, and may start
later by mutual agreement. The initial term of the appointment will be
for two years, with extensions possible.
Responsibilities
• Carry out atmospheric measurements of reactive NO, NO2, NOy, and O3 by
chemiluminescence aboard the NASA DC-8 research aircraft during ATom.
• Design, test, and implement upgrades to the instrumentation as needed.
• Carry out data reduction, critical evaluation, and archiving of the
field data.
• Analyze the data, in conjunction with other field and laboratory
measurements and model results, to evaluate and improve current
understanding of atmospheric emissions, the processes that affect them,
and the climate- and air quality-relevant consequences.
• Present results at scientific meetings and publish in peer-reviewed
journals.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications
• Doctoral degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, or related field.
Capability for self-guided, motivated, and original research.
• Ability to work well with other researchers and support staff in a
collaborative research environment.
• Proven experience in design, construction, operation, and maintenance
of custom-built scientific instrumentation, with exceptional attention
to detail.
• Ability to perform required duties associated with ~2 month remote
field deployments in support of focused measurement campaigns.
• Experience with atmospheric sampling of reactive trace gases is desirable.
