The Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR) is one of the leading institutes in the field of marine sciences. With 950 employees and a yearly budget of 72 Mio €, its major goal is fundamental and applied research in all areas of marine sciences. The GEOMAR division “Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics” is offering a

PhD position

in the research unit Marine Meteorology in the newly founded working group Atmospheric Dynamics and Prediction.

Job Description:

Atmospheric predictions on weekly to monthly timescales are highly sought after in industry applications, but they still represent a significant challenge to the scientific community.

The successful candidate will pursue research on subseasonal to seasonal variability and predictability, the coupling between the tropics and the midlatitudes, including the predictability of stratosphere-troposphere coupling.

The work will involve the statistical analysis of model output and observations, numerical modelling with a general circulation model, and theory.

Depending on interest, the project can be expanded to include applications for industry stakeholders.

Qualifications:

Diploma or Master’s degree in natural sciences, e.g. Meteorology, Atmospheric Dynamics, Climate Physics, Physics, or equivalent

Knowledge of the dynamics of the atmosphere and interactions with the ocean

Preferable: Experience with climate modeling, analysis of climate model

simulations and/or application of statistical methods

Very good programming skills (Unix/Linux, Fortran, Matlab)

Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team

Fluent in English

The position will remain open until filled, with a flexible start date. The salary will be 75% class 13 TVöD of the German salary scale for public employees.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages female scientists and scientists with disabilities to apply. Provided equal qualification, they will be preferentially considered.

Please send your application for this position (letter of motivation, CV), including two names for possible references, with the subject “Doktorand/ME” by email in pdf format to the personnel office (Angela Schlüter, aschlueter(at)geomar.de <http://geomar.de/>) until 22 January 2016.
