*Assistant Professor or Associate Professor and Program Director of
Environmental Science*
Sweet Briar prides itself on creating a learning environment that
encourages young women to fulfill their highest potential. Leadership in
all walks of life is fostered by the special connections our faculty make
with their students, and Sweet Briar women translate their academic
experiences to lead interesting and important lives.
Sweet Briar College seeks a collaborative, creative environmental
scientist, for a tenure track position at the advanced assistant or
associate level, committed to the education of undergraduates, to join the
Department of Environmental Science and create synergies with other
departments. The field of expertise is open, but we especially welcome
applicants who will use our 3250-acre campus as a research station and
classroom (e.g. sustainable agriculture, soil science, biogeochemistry,
ecohydrology).
Our environmental alumnae are successful in graduate programs, and employed
as environmental consultants, engineers, geospatial analysts and field
scientists. The environmental program has unrealized potential, because
Sweet Briar has distinct assets that offer opportunities for the program to
expand in new directions. Among these assets are:
· a 3250 acre campus with exceptional hardwood forests, permanent
forest plots, a deer exclosure, lakes, a community garden, and warm season
grass fields planted as biofuels (

· a state of the art research tower for studying
biosphere-atmosphere interactions (http://sbc-lars.blog.sbc.edu/)
· an administration that is supportive of academic and research use
of the land
· one of two women’s colleges in the United States offering an
ABET-accredited engineering degree program
· faculty in the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering and
Physics, Environmental Science, Mathematics and Psychology who are highly
collaborative in teaching and research
· support for faculty research including an internal faculty grants
program and a summer Honors research program
