*Detailed attribution of ozone production to emissions of VOC precursors *
TheInstituteforAdvancedSustainabilityStudiese.V.(IASS)isaninternational,interdisciplinarycentreofexcellencelocatedinPotsdam,financedbytheFederalMinistryofEducationandResearchandtheFederalStateofBrandenburg,devotedtopromotingscienceandresearchforglobalsustainability,particularlyintheareasofclimatechange,theearthsystemandthedevelopmentofsocialpathwaystosustainability.
As part of the IASS program of work, the institute has established a
research focus on Air Quality in the context of Global Change, which
seeks to identify transformative pathways for the mitigation of poor air
quality, globally the single largest environmental risk factor for
premature death. IASS researchers actively engage with stakeholders from
science and civil society a transdisciplinary agenda-setting process.
Current research projects aim to understand the sources of air
pollutants and their precursors, their transformation processes in the
atmosphere, impacts, and options for mitigation.
To strengthen these efforts, the IASS is looking to fill a

This positionisavailableuntil December 31,
2016,withthepossibilityofextensionthereafter,
toinvestigatethedetailedmechanismsofozoneformationusingthe regional air
quality model
WRF-Chem.Theprojectwillprovideinformationaboutozoneformationmechanismsandpossiblemitigationpathwaysunderlyingpolicy-relevantapplications,
by
deliveringinformationaboutthequantityofozoneformedduringatmosphericoxidationofdifferentVOC,andthetimingofthisozoneproduction.OfparticularinterestisthepotentialforlongrangetransportofVOCoxidationintermediatestocontributetobackgroundtroposphericozone,ortoexceedanceofairqualitythresholdsindownwindregions.Themaintaskoftheprojectwillbetheimplementationintothe
WRF-ChemmodelofamethodfortaggingtheoxidationintermediatesofVOCwhichhasalreadybeensuccessfullyimplementedandtestedinaglobalmodellingframework.
ApplicationsareinvitedfromresearcherswithaPhDinatmosphericsciences or a
related area,and a strong
backgroundinthedevelopmentofregionalscaleairqualitymodels.Experienceinmodel
development with WRF-Chemwillbea
distinctadvantage.Candidatesshouldhavewell developed
scientificcomputerprogrammingskills
(UNIX,FORTRAN,etc.),andbefluentinwrittenandspokenEnglish.
