Our group seeks to improve both theoretical and applied understanding of 
both the response of the climate system to various types of forcing, and 
the strategies that could potentially be applied to reduce climate 
damage (e.g., mitigation, adaptation, solar geoengineering). We are 
interested in both physics and biogeochemistry, and also impacts of 
global change. We currently use the NCAR CESM family of models as our 
primary climate modeling tool.  Most of our post-processing is done in 
python, often using cdat (Climate Data Analysis Tools).

We are seeking an outstanding postdoctoral researcher who can lead 
scientific research projects using global atmospheric general 
circulation models and/or coupled atmosphere-ocean models. We would like 
to understand how changes in surface energy and latent heat fluxes, 
different radiative forcing agents, and top-of-atmosphere energy fluxes, 
affect transient and equilibrium climate change both regionally and 
globally. We are thinking about this problem in terms of time evolution 
of effective radiative forcing and climate feedback parameters, and 
related terms for other fields such as precipitation, ocean heat uptake, 
heat transports,etc. However, we are open to any type of analysis that 
can help build better understanding. In addition to global-scale 
analyses, we would like to understand how regional changes in these 
fluxes might affect regional climates. This work would have relevance to 
understanding basic climate physics, regional climate change, and some 
geoengineering proposals. However, we aim to focus on fairly idealized 
studies aimed at building basic conceptual understanding, and are less 
interested in intensive studies focusing on factors important to a 
specific geographic area. We plan to use a spectrum of model 
configurations ranging from aquaplanet with specified sea-surface 
temperatures to configurations with “realistic” topography and a full 
3-D ocean.

The successful candidate will be interested in working on a diverse set 
of projects, playing a leading role in planning and executing 
investigations. We are an eclectic group that includes climate modelers, 
energy-system analysts, and field researchers. We are looking to develop 
an exciting collegial atmosphere with a lot of personal freedom, wherein 
each group member both leads research projects and collaborates on 
projects led by others. Achievement in the area of scientific 
publication is the primary filter determining which applications receive 
greater consideration. We are flexible with regard to your specific 
domain of expertise.

Up to three positions can be filled with this posting, and are available 
now.  We are flexible with regard to start dates. The initial term will 
be for one year with the potential for renewal for a second year, up to 
a maximum of four years with exceptional performance. The position will 
involve working with Ken Caldeira at the Carnegie Institution for 
Science Department of Global Ecology on the Stanford University campus. 
Carnegie Institution post-docs have access to most Stanford facilities.
