Purpose of the position: To serve as analytical chemist and manager for a=

state-of-the-art analytical instrument facility at the University of Texa=
s
at Austin Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, Texas.  Responsible f=

overseeing all aspects of scheduling, operating and maintaining core
analytical instrumentation and training other users.=20

Essential Functions:
(1) Provide direction, supervise, operate and maintain institutional core=

analytical laboratory including setup, calibration, quality control, and
routine sample analysis.  Equipment in the core laboratory includes two
isotope ratio mass spectrometers, an elemental analyzer, a total organic
carbon/total nitrogen analyzer, and planned tandem mass spectrometer. The=

lab manager will also oversee shared instrumentation in other laboratorie=
s
on campus. 40%
(2) Provide training to certify user competency for instrument use.
Development and review of quality assurance plan and control procedures
including a scheduling system for user access to instruments. Development=

and refining of new methodologies for unique marine samples. Development =
and
review of laboratory health and safety plans, hazard communication.
Budgeting, ordering and inventory of expendable and durable laboratory
supplies required for core laboratory. 30%
(3) Collaborate as co-principal investigator with faculty, postdoctoral
students and other scientific staff in the development of research propos=
als
that require core instrument data, methods development and/or sample
analysis. Maintain accurate records, backups and filing system for all da=
ta
and QC. Insure accurate entry or transfer of data into LIMS including
linking of GC data system. 20%
(4) Serve as analytical chemistry expert and resource for communications
between funding agencies and the research unit. 10%

Marginal/Incidental functions: Other related functions as assigned.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must
provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of
residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver'=
s
License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.=20

Required qualifications: Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry or related
field and two years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and qual=
ity
control for analytical instruments such as those described in the essenti=
al
functions.  Alternatively, a master's degree in analytical chemistry or
related field and four years of experience as stated above.=20=20

Position requires a high degree of organizational and communication skill=
;
and experience  training others in instrumental analysis; writing clear
operational protocols and procedures; instrument trouble shooting; managi=
ng
sample inventories; and compliance with laboratory safety.

Preferred qualifications: Experience as a supervisor in a mass spectromet=
ry
core facility setting or other laboratory environment with demonstrated
success in lab management and scientific output. Experience teaching staf=
f
or students in the use of mass spectrometry instrumentation and analysis.=
