on an as-needed basis.
NCAR Earth System Laboratory (NESL) - Climate and Global Dynamics
Division (CGD)
Partial relocation costs paid per UCAR's relocation policy
If necessary, UCAR/NCAR will sponsor a work visa (e.g., H1B, etc.)
to fill this position.
Applicants are required to submit:
(1) Cover letter

(3) Statement of research interests
(4) Three reference letters
The research statement should explicitly address how you might
contribute to the project as described in this job announcement.

*BASIC JOB FUNCTION*: Conducts research on the representation of
marine ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles in the Community Earth
System Model (CESM). Identifies key science questions of interest
regarding the representation of the lower trophic levels of marine
ecosystems and their impact on biogeochemical cycles. Designs and
implements parameterizations of ecosystem processes in CESM.
*DUTIES INCLUDE*:
Works with a team of NCAR and DOE scientists to improve and
modularize the marine biogeochemistry component of the Community
Earth System Model (CESM). The overarching objectives are to provide
robust predications of marine ecosystem dynamics in the context of
climate variability and change. Furthermore, the project seeks to
enable ecosystem models spanning a range of complexity, including
those suitable for high-resolution physical frameworks. The
postdoctoral researcher will conduct research on the representation
of marine ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles in CESM. The
individual will have the freedom to identify and focus on topics of
their own interest within the context of the broader project. Areas
of particular interest include food web dynamics, the microbial
loop, phytoplankton ecology/physiology, nutrient utilization ratios,
mechanisms controlling export production, and scale-dependence of
physical-biological interactions. The postdoctoral researcher will
have access to the high performance computing environment at NCAR,
and will work with DOE collaborators at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Presents results at conferences and seminars; publishes results in
the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
*REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE*:
Education and Experience:
* Ph.D. in oceanography, physical, biological or chemical
sciences, engineering, or applied math.
* Candidates should have a strong background in fields relevant to
ocean biogeochemistry.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
* Expertise in oceanography, with particular emphasis on
biogeochemistry, plankton ecology and physiology, and/or
physical-biological coupling.
* Strong written and oral communication skills, especially for
scientific publications.
* Experience working with oceanographic models.
* Proficiency writing scientific codes, especially in Fortran.
* Experience working in a UNIX environment.
* Expertise working with large geophysical data sets, including
climate model output.
* Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
*DESIRED (but not required)*:
* Marine ecosystem and/or oceanographic modeling experience.
