UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN (UIUC). The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for four full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty positions; all ranks will be considered. The Department seeks to expand its expertise in emerging interdisciplinary areas that are critical in addressing global challenges through innovative education and research. Desired areas of expertise are:
(1) Geotechnical Engineering, including Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering.  This area addresses infrastructure development and renewal in urban environment; extreme natural geohazards including earthquakes and massive landslides; engineered excavations for resilient underground space; and energy applications, including mining, hydraulic fracturing, geothermal sources, carbon sequestration, and nuclear waste disposal.
(2) Environmental Fluid Mechanics.  This area addresses understanding how coupled energy and air/water flows interact with biogeochemical processes across watersheds, rivers, ecosystems, and the built environment; and study of physical interfaces (e.g. land surface-atmosphere, environmental boundary-layer flows, hyporheic zone, ecohydraulics, lake-atmosphere, coastal zones and estuaries, tsunami dynamics).
(3) Microbiomes of the Natural and Built Environment.   This area addresses microbiome research in the natural and built environment, with applications to public and environmental health, food and water security, resource recovery, zoonotic diseases, host-pathogen interactions, and toxicology.
(4) Multifunctional Materials for Energy and Environmental Sustainability.  This area focuses on materials development and synthesis for resource recovery, energy production, enhanced environmental sensing, biomimicry, green chemistry, and pollution control and treatment in air, water, and soil.
(5) Urban Infrastructure Resilience to Extreme Events.  This area addresses resilience of structures and infrastructure systems to water, wind and fire-related hazards.  The area includes analytical, numerical, and experimental research that aims at developing a better understanding of these hazards and their effects, as well as developing rigorous design approaches that will mitigate these hazards and contribute to the broad goal of societal risk management.

The successful candidates are expected to develop and maintain an internationally recognized research program, to contribute fully to teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses, and to provide service to the profession. The successful candidates are also expected to develop interactions with faculty across the department, college and campus. Opportunities exist to participate in related CEE and campus-wide communities, such as the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory, Prairie Research Institute, Illinois Center for Transportation, MAE Center (Creating a Multi-hazard Approach to Engineering),  and the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) site, the National Rail Transportation Center, the Information Trust Institute, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, the Institute of Genomic Biology, the Safe Global Water Institute, as well as nine other Engineering Departments. Applicants must hold an earned doctorate in an appropriate field. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications.
