Universität Hamburg and Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht are dedicated to
sustainability.
Equal opportunity and family-friendly policies are a matter of course. We
also treasure cultural
diversity, communication and interaction among people from different
backgrounds and with
different lifestyles.
In a joint appointment process with the Universität Hamburg (School of
Mathematics, Informatics
and Natural Sciences), the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) is seeking
to fill the position of a
W3 PROFESSORSHIP FOR SYSTEM ANALYSIS AND MODELLING
AND DIRECTOR OF THE INSTITUTE OF COASTAL RESEARCH
commencing as soon as possible, ref. code 2195/W3. The place of employment
is Geesthacht.
Applicants are expected to have international research experience as well
as a successful track
record in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally-funded
projects. The University
and HZG place particular emphasis on the quality of teaching and therefore
request applicants
to provide details of both their teaching experience and objectives.
Universität Hamburg and HZG seek to increase the proportion of women in
teaching and
research. We therefore explicitly encourage qualified female academics to
apply. Qualified
female applicants receive preference in the application process.
Tasks:
With a total of 180 employees, the Institute of Coastal Research of the
HZG carries out research
on the geophysical and biogeochemical processes of coastal ocean and the
influence of anthropogenic
changes. (http://www.hzg.de/institute/coastal_research/index.html.en)
We are looking for an excellent researcher and leader in coastal sciences
to head the Institute of
Coastal Research jointly with two colleagues. He/She will be responsible
for the division “System
Analysis and Modelling”.
The scientific focus of this division is on modelling and analysis of
long-term regional variability,
trends and scenarios. The top priority is the application of models to
analyse and understand
the complex geophysical processes in the coastal regions with a special
emphasis on longterm
changes associated with regional climate and anthropogenic influences.
Collaboration
with social science groups is encouraged. The new director of the
Institute will continue this
successful and unique avenue of research of the entire Institute of
Coastal Research at the
Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht to further develop HZG’s profile into a
centre of excellence for
integrated numerical modelling of coastal regions. The additional research
topics of the other
two departments of the institute, namely “Operational Systems” and
“Biogeochemistry of
Coastal Seas”, should therefore be included in modelling and simulation.
The Institute for Coastal Research at HZG and the Center of Earth System
Sciences and
Sustainability (CEN) at Universität Hamburg strive to further intensify
their cooperation.
Therefore a close cooperation with CEN is expected.
The successful candidate will be an internationally recognized scientist,
who
• is an expert in the discipline of geophysics and has an excellent
process-based understanding
of the complex interdisciplinary connections in the coastal regions
• can apply and develop numerical models (e. g. earth system models) and
explore scenarios for
the development of coastal regions
• is able to collaborate with related natural and socio-economic sciences
• has extensive experience in research, teaching and in a leading
management position
• has an excellent publication record
The position includes lectures for two hours per week at the Universität
Hamburg.
Requirements:
Academic qualifications and additional requirements as specified in § 15
of the Hamburg Higher
Education Act. Several years of research activity abroad as well as a
trans-disciplinary and socioeconomic
research interest are desired.
It is expected that the applicant will maintain, or further develop, the
already existing climate
and coastal research cooperations with various institutions in Northern
Germany and abroad.
HZG is partner of the German Climate Computing Centre (DKRZ). The
candidate is encouraged to
use this scientific resource for his own scientific projects.
Qualified disabled candidates receive preference in the application
process.
For detailed information, please contact the Scientific Director of the
Helmholtz-Zentrum
Geesthacht, Prof. Wolfgang Kaysser (kaysser at hzg.de).
The deadline for applications is 19 June 2014. Please submit your
application,
including the standard documents and ref. code 2195/W3 to:
An den Präsidenten der Universität Hamburg, Organisationsreferat,
Ausschreibungsstelle, Mittelweg 177, 20148 Hamburg or via email to
UniHHAusschreibungsstelle at verw.uni-hamburg.de.
