Job Description
The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology=20
is seeking candidates for a Remote Sensing (RS)=20
and Geographic Information System (GIS)=20
Specialist. The RS & GIS Specialist will help=20
build GIS capacity at the university, support=20
analysis of various spatial datasets to assess=20
forest change and help in the collection and=20
management of biodiversity and environmental data.
Responsibilities
=84h Participate in ongoing research projects by:
1. Acquiring, processing and analyzing satellite=20
imagery and other spatial data (cleaning data,=20
preparing metadata, managing geodatabases)
2. Conducting digital mapping, land use/land=20
cover mapping based on remote sensing data using digital technologies
=84h Prepare professional geographic maps for=20
online applications and print publications, using=20
advanced cartographic skills.
=84h Researching and developing attribute databases; maintaining databases.
=84h Maintaining GIS hardware and software;=20
installing software and upgrades; troubleshooting=20
software issues and providing technical support.
=84h Responding to requests for information and data.
Qualifications
=84h An MS degree or PhD in geography,=20
environmental science, forestry or related discipline is preferred.
=84h Experience with GIS applications, tools, and=20
resources including geodatabase configuration and=20
management and common APIs and tools, in=20
particular ESRI ArcGIS (desktop and server) and Python programming language.
=84h Proficiency in GIS/RS software including some=20
or all of the following: ArcGIS Desktop 10.x,=20
ArcGIS Server, ERDAS Imagine, Idrisi, ENVI
=84h Experience in spatial analysis and modeling.
=84h Strong analytical skills, including raster=20
analysis, generating statistics and indicators=20
from spatial data, automating common tasks are a plus.
=84h Proficiency in graphics software (e.g., Adobe=20
Photoshop and/or Illustrator) with an ability to=20
produce high quality maps for publication is a plus.
Salary and Benefits
The appointment is initially for one year with=20
possibility of renewal. Salary is commensurate=20
