*Assistant professor in Analytical Chemistry at the Vrije Universiteit
Brussel : Brussels, Belgium*
The research unit Analytical, Environmental and Geo-Chemistry (AMGC) within
the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Bio-engineering
Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has an opening for an
assistant professor in analytical chemistry, starting in the fall of 2014.
The research group, currently composed of 3 full-time professors and more
than 35 researchers, focuses on the use of chemical and biogeochemical
tracers to solve modern and ancient global changes and on the detection of
trace metals and micro-organic pollutants in aquatic systems. The
instrument park includes several modern IRMS, HR-ICP-MS and bio-assay
techniques. The successful candidate is expected to develop his/her own
research program
The teaching assignment of the candidate can contain both introductory
classes at bachelor level and advanced, research oriented courses at master
level. The detailed list of courses to be taught will be discussed with the
candidate, depending on his/her specific expertise and language proficiency.
The candidate holds a PhD degree in sciences (chemistry), (bio-)
engineering sciences or equivalent, with specialization in analytical
chemistry, from an accredited university. Her/his research interests lie in
analytical chemistry and its applications in environmental, global change
and pollution problems. She/he must possess a recognized expertise in
analytical developments and interest in the design of innovative
methodologies for the determination of biogeochemical tracers (major/trace
elements, isotopic ratios, micro-pollutants...) in various media. Experience
in instrument design and/or optimization is a clear asset.
An extended publication record including regular presentations at
international scientific meetings are requested. The candidate should have
an outstanding record of research and academic activities, including
postdoctoral experience with preferentially extended stays abroad and track
record of generating external funding from different sources. Moreover,
experience advising or co-advising students theses and/or teaching at the
undergraduate or graduate levels are desired.
The candidate has excellent knowledge of English, and excellent knowledge
of Dutch or a willingness to learn Dutch. At the bachelor level, Dutch is
the VUB official teaching language. Non native-speakers are expected to be
capable to teach in Dutch after 3 years. Female candidates are particularly
encouraged to apply.
