PEOPLE, POLLUTION AND POLICY - EMBEDDING HUMAN AGENTS IN EARTH SYSTEM MODELS

Supervisors: Drs Paul Young and Andrew Jarvis, Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University, UK

Why are we interested?
Computer models of the Earth system are becoming progressively more complex, but they do not generally include human behaviours. For example, all mainstream climate projections follow predetermined emissions pathways and do not account for the fact that humans will respond to the changing environment. In this PhD project, you will address this critical omission.

Under the guidance of experts in climate science and control theory and risk, you will develop techniques to represent the feedbacks between environmental change and society’s behaviour. This will involve incorporating well-established methods that describe such feedbacks into state-of-the-art Earth System Models. In particular, your focus will be on how “model” human decision makers manage atmospheric composition, including stratospheric ozone depletion and air quality.
