Subject: Research Assistant Position in Wetland Biogeochemistry at LUMCON
A Research Assistant in Wetland Biogeochemistry at the Louisiana=20
Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) is sought to participate in a ser=
ies=20
of field and laboratory experiments studying the effects of the Macondo O=
il=20
Spill on coastal marsh ecosystems. The assistant will join a large, multi=
-
institution team of researchers in the Coastal Waters Consortium=20
(cwc.lumcon.edu), a BP GoMRI-funded project studying the impacts of the o=
il=20
spill and future spills on salt marshes and coastal environments. The=20
position is associated with a collaborative subproject on wetland=20
biogeochemistry and microbial ecology between Drs. Brian Roberts (LUMCON)=
,=20
Anne Giblin (Marine Biological Laboratory), and Anne Bernhard (Connecticu=
t=20
College). The objectives of the project are to improve our understanding =
of=20
temporal and spatial patterns in marsh biogeochemical process rates,=20
associated microbial communities, and factors regulating rates and to=20
evaluate the impact of oil exposure on marsh biogeochemical processes and=
=20
associated microbial communities. The research assistant will support the=
=20
field and laboratory analytical activities designed to accomplish these=20=
objectives. The position will be based at LUMCON and will require extensi=
ve=20
field and laboratory work. This is a unique opportunity to collaborate w=
ith=20
top scientists from around the United States in a large, interdisciplinar=
y=20
research project of great importance to the US Gulf Coast and other=20
ecosystems impacted by oil-related activities.=20
Qualifications: The candidate must have a M.S. or B.S in ecology, wetlan=
d=20
science, biogeochemistry or a related field. Familiarity with analytical=20=
instrumentation including autoanalyzers (for analysis of inorganic=20
nutrients), TOC/TN analyzers (DOC/TDN), elemental analyzers (C, N), and/o=
r=20
gas chromatographs (CO2, CH4, and N2O) is desired. The candidate will als=
o=20
be expected to participate in field work that may require physical effort=
to=20
transport equipment in field sites throughout Louisiana that are accessib=
le=20
only by small boats. The ability to work in a group setting is essential,=
as=20
this researcher will work collaboratively with the PIs, post docs, gradua=
te=20
students, and other research associates/technicians on this project as we=
ll=20
as personnel on the larger Coastal Waters Consortium project. The positio=
n=20
requires high organizational and communication skills as well as signific=
ant=20
database management capabilities.=20
Duration and Start Date: We desire to fill this position as soon as=20
possible. Initial appointment is for up to one year with possible additio=
nal=20
support dependent upon funding and satisfactory performance.
Location: The position will be based at the Louisiana Universities Marine=
=20
Consortium (LUMCON) at the DeFelice Marine Center in Cocodrie, LA (visit=20=
http://www.lumcon.edu for information on the facility). The field sites =
are=20
located along the Louisiana coast between LUMCON and the Mississippi Rive=
r.=20=20=20
To Apply: Send a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the name,=20
address, phone and email contact for at least three individuals qualified=
to=20
comment on scientific and work qualifications to Dr. Brian Roberts=20
(broberts at lumcon.edu) with =93Wetlands Research Assistant position=94 in =
the=20
subject line. For questions or more information contact Dr. Roberts by em=
ail=20
or phone (985-851-2821).
Deadline: Review of applications will commence immediately and continue=20=
