Maryland, Baltimore 21250. The Department of Geography and Environmental
Systems at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites
applications and nominations for Department Chair. The successful
candidate will hold a PhD in a field that complements faculty strengths
(e.g. Geography, Environmental Science, Conservation Science, Ecology,
Natural Resources) and with academic achievements commensurate with
appointment as a Full Professor, although senior Associate Professors will
be considered as well. The candidate should have demonstrated leadership
and administrative skills, a strong commitment to interdisciplinary
scholarship and teaching, and an active research program.

The Department has experienced rapid growth in recent years, more than
doubling undergraduate majors to over 300 in our B.S. and B.A. programs,
and with current enrollment of 50 M.S. students (including accelerated
B.S./MS, M.S., Professional M.S. in GIS) and 16 Ph.D. students. The
department has 15 regular faculty and 9 adjunct/affiliate faculty, and has
established a strong record of federal grant support (e.g., NSF, NASA,
NOAA, USDA). Faculty research interests cover a range of topics in human
geography and environmental science and management, including ecology and
biogeography, global change science, hydrology and geomorphology,
meteorology and severe storms, GIS and remote sensing, urban geography,
public health, environmental history, political ecology, resource
conservation, and environmental policy. Urban environmental research is
particularly well-represented with the presence on campus and faculty
collaboration with the Center for Urban Environmental Research and
Education (CUERE) and the Baltimore Ecosystem Study Urban LTER. We also
have strong collaborative ties with UMBC’s NASA-funded Joint Center for
Earth Systems Technology and the USGS MD-DE-DC Water Science Center, both
located in UMBC’s Research Park. Collaborations with other departments and
programs on campus include Biological Sciences; Chemical, Biochemical and
Environmental Engineering; Computer Science and Electrical Engineering;
Public Policy; Gender & Women’s Studies; Global Studies; Interdisciplinary
Studies; and the multi-campus Marine, Estuarine and Environmental Sciences
program.

Applications should be sent to (apply.interfolio.com/25219
<http://apply.interfolio.com/25270>) and should include: cover letter with
description of leadership vision, administrative experience, and research
program; CV and the names of three references. Questions can be directed
to Dr. Andrew Miller at GESChairSearch at umbc.edu. Review of applications
will begin on Sept. 15, 2014 and will continue until the position is filled.

UMBC is especially proud of the diversity of its student body and we seek
to attract an equally diverse applicant pool for this position. We have a
strong commitment to increasing faculty diversity. UMBC is an Equal
Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
