Postdoc opportunity: research in mangrove forest
We are recruiting for a new (post-doctoral) position focused on controls of
greenhouse gas fluxes (CH4, CO2, H2O) in a mangrove forest.
This project represents and exciting an innovative establishment of a new
eddy covariance site in Chiapas, Mexico (La Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve).
This study site is part of a network of intensive carbon monitoring sites
in Mexico to support implementation of REDD+ activities and the regional
eddy covariance network (MexFlux). The task will involve installation of
micrometeorological equipment, capacitation of colleagues at the
collaborating institutions for day-a-day instrument maintenance, analysis
of eddy covariance data, long-term (i.e., >10 years) information about
mangrove productivity, and reporting findings in scientific publications.
The candidate will work with collaborative and interdisciplinary teams of
researchers from several institutions in the USA (i.e., University of
Delaware and US Forest Service) and Mexico (e.g., CONAFOR, ECOSUR, CONANP,
CONABIO). It is expected that the candidate is involved in installing the
instrumentation and collaborating with colleagues from ECOSUR in Tapachula,
Chiapas, Mexico. The majority of the time will be at the University of
Delaware, USA for data processing and analysis.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D in a relevant ecological, environmental or engineering science
- Experience using the eddy covariance technique is essential
- Experience with computer programming, and analysis of large datasets.
- Strong publication record in the peer-reviewed literature
- Be able to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary
research team.
- Ability to communicate in Spanish or willingness to learn Spanish
Home institution
The position will be funded through the University of Delaware. Outstanding
UD benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance plans; access to
UD recreation and cultural activities; and more! UD conducts pre-employment

verification of academic credentials, licenses, certifications, and work
history.
Required content of the application
Applications and inquiries should be sent to Rodrigo Vargas (
rvargas at udel.edu) and Richard Birdsey (rbirdsey at fs.fed.us). Applications
should include (1) a curriculum vitae, (2) statement of motivation, and (3)
names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of at least two
references.
The position is available from January 1st and will remain open until
