*Title: PhD position in microbial ecology, University of Minnesota, Twin
Cities*
There is a position for a one Ph.D. student beginning summer or fall of
2014 in the Gutknecht laboratory (jgut at umn.edu,
http://www.swac.umn.edu/People/Faculty/JessicaGutknecht/index.htm). The
specific project can be discussed although it will fall in the range of my
research interests described below. Deadlines for LAS are in December 2013,
and see the LAS homepage for more information: http://www.laas.umn.edu/. I
possibly may be able to take students from other graduate programs at the
University of Minnesota as well. Contact me if you are interested.
My general interest lies in understanding ecosystem scale processes through
the lens of soil microbial ecology. Soil microorganisms are important
drivers of soil quality and ecosystem function, depending both on local
adaptation and on interactions with plants and other soil biota. Soil
microbial community growth, composition, and activity can be important
indicators of soil quality, sustainability, and soil recovery to
disturbance. I’m especially interested in how soil microbial community
dynamics can inform our understanding of ecosystem functions such as carbon
cycling and sustainability under global change and other human influences.
