*Department of Geography, Kent State University*

Research support for a PhD or highly qualified Masters Student focused on
urban sustainability and planning is available for the Fall 2014-15
academic year with two years of renewal based on satisfactory progress. The
appointment includes a monthly stipend, tuition waiver, and health benefits
with funding opportunities for fieldwork and conference presentations. The
research assistantship is under the direction of Dr. V. Kelly Turner.
Candidates should have a strong interest in the human dimensions of
environmental decision-making and management, the qualitative and
mixed-method social sciences, and a desire to engage in collaborative,
interdisciplinary research. Potential research domains include, but are not
limited to, sustainable urban planning, urban ecology, water resources,
institutional analysis, and decision-making under uncertainty.

The research assistant will have the opportunity to participate in the
annual Water Research Symposium and to work with faculty and students
associated with an interdisciplinary university priority research cluster
on urban ecology and hydrology. This includes collaborative research
opportunities with the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative
(CUDC)<http://www.cudc.kent.edu/>,
the Center for Ecology and Natural Resources Sustainability
(CENRS)<http://www.kent.edu/cas/cenrs/>,
the GIS: Health and Hazards Lab <http://www.kent.edu/ghhlab/index.cfm>, and
the City and Community Studies Initiative
(CCSI)<http://www.kent.edu/CAS/Geography/CCSI/>.
They will join a growing department and a vibrant downtown undergoing many
exciting changes (Main Street Kent) <http://www.mainstreetkent.org/>.
