The Center for Integrative Geosciences and the Department of Geography at the University of Connecticut invite applications for an academic faculty and administrative leadership position as Director of the Center. The successful candidate will effectively lead interdisciplinary research and instructional programs (undergraduate and graduate) as the Center director and hold a faculty position in the Department of Geography.

The Director will be tasked with guiding the Geosciences at UConn towards a higher level of national and international stature as a center of research and innovation, and applicants should articulate a vision of how to build on current strengths in the context of emerging opportunities and challenges in national, international and global science. In addition to strengthening research in the geosciences, the director should engage with trends in the geographical, geospatial, and environmental sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to advance the Center's mission by attracting and mentoring the highest quality faculty, strengthening the existing Ph.D., M.S., and bachelor's degree programs, and expanding interdisciplinary research activities. As a faculty member in the Department of Geography, successful candidates will have a record of research productivity, external funding, effective teaching, professional service, and public engagement.

Strong leadership and a commitment to collegiality are expected, and the successful candidate should serve as an advocate for the Center at the college and university levels, especially with regard to initiatives in geology, geography, and the environment. This is a ten-month tenure track position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Center for Integrative Geosciences offers interdisciplinary programs that advance understanding of the interactions between geological, biological, chemical, and physical processes. Eleven faculty members associated with the Center (three hired in the past six years) span a range of expertise, including hydrogeology, geochemistry, geobiology, paleontology, structural geology, geomorphology, and geophysics. The Geography Department has 14 faculty (six hired in the last six years) with expertise in human geography, environmental change, geographic information science and geospatial statistics. Both programs are poised to expand further as the University of Connecticut consolidates its position as the best public university in New England and one of the top 20 public universities nationwide through investment provided by the Next Generation Connecticut Initiative (http://uconn.edu/nextgenct/).

Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate for this position will have a Ph.D. in geosciences or a related field, with academic achievements corresponding to appointment as associate or full professor with tenure. Applicants should have a highly distinguished record of research, teaching, mentoring students, public engagement, and external funding; a commitment to diversity and excellence in the learning experience; and demonstrated leadership and administrative skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Research interests that will strengthen, build or bridge existing programs in Geosciences and Geography. Record of attracting and mentoring the highest quality faculty; of strengthening a graduate program; and of expanding interdisciplinary research activities.

This is a 10-month appointment with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2014.

Interested candidates should apply online (www.jobs.uconn.edu, Search #2014299) with their CV, three separate 1-2 page statements that describe their leadership philosophy, teaching philosophy, and research specialization, and contact information for five (5) references (contact with references will not be made without your prior consent and only if selected as a viable candidate). For further information about this position, please contact Andrew Bush (andrew.bush at uconn.edu<mailto:andrew.bush at uconn.edu>) or Ken Foote (ken.foote at uconn.edu<mailto:ken.foote at uconn.edu>).
