Hi all,

We had another good call today. Hugh, Jack, Ruth, Randy, and Laura were on the call. We talked about the NSF INSPIRE call that happened last year and we hope to apply to it this year - in the Winter. But there is no information about an INSPIRE call this winter. So we will wait to find out about that. 

It sounds like the Montana SPD solar conference went well, though no one on the phone had been able to see the Eclipse Megamovie poster.

We went over goals, objectives, audiences, and design on the call today. The outcome from this conversation is attached. This document will form the basis for any science education proposals we submit.

I mentioned that Claire Raftery has done a test movie for Scott McIntosh. We hope to share that out soon with you and with the general public!

A. INSPIRE NSF proposal (not yet on NSF for this coming year. Here is last year's call: nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504852&org=NSF&sel_org=NSF&from=fund)

B. Report on Montana Solar conference.

C. Going over goals of this team:

1. Providing teachable moments %u2013 what do we want to teach while they are paying attention to and photographing any future astronomical events such as eclipses of the Sun and Moon and passing comets?

example goal sentence:

We aim to provide teachable moments about the orbits and connections between the Sun, Moon, Earth, and other solar system objects.

2. Citizen Science Effort %u2013 people are involved, product out soon, facilitate them doing it. Pro-Am version. Use the full moon and facebook as a test for this effort. Do something fun with people taking image of same thing around the country.

We aim to teach practices of science and technology by engaging the public in photographing exceptional events related to the Sun, Moon, Earth, and other solar system objects.

3. Science Goal %u2013 learning more about the Sun's corona/chromosphere (same camera, same driver, plugged into a computer with same software%u2026etc.) So we'd need instructions for this. Or we form a commercial partnership to distribute software/hardware to astronomical groups. Standard script for celestron/meade%u2026etc. People who run these programs: astronomy outreach foundation %u2013 it is a foundation looking for money. Worried about aging of amateur astronomers %u2013 would like to do more projects without paying for them%u2026They could co-sponsor this work. Pro-kits: operating one giant camera system in synchronicity with one another (distributed computing. Prograde level).

We aim to learn more about the Sun's chromosphere by engaging highly skilled professionals in high quality photographic images of the 2017 Eclipse across the U.S.

These are my main objectives for our call tomorrow. Add more agenda items if you have them!
