all everyone--

I can do a meeting here or in Boulder on March 11th. I was not planning on a call this morning, but do look forward to starting up the EMT conversation soon.

Hi all,

I cannot make a call today, if we are still planning on having our Wednesday calls. But I wanted to suggest a date for a EMT planning meeting based on this conversation early in the month. Would people be able to meet on...

March 11th, 2013? At UCAR or Berkeley?

I think if people cannot make it in person, we can also plan to have some video capabilities at the meeting for people who have to stay home.

I would like to suggest the following agenda for this day:

early morning: introductions
morning: finalize our goals/impacts of our program
lunch:
early afternoon: start to touch on the design neede to meet the goals/impacts based on the pilot test in November
break
late afternoon: put together a 'planning' schedule for the year.

I'd like to propose that we spend this 2013 year really creating a good design for the EMT project - basically crafting a proposal/implementation plan for the next phase of EMT. Then we can determine where to submit multiple proposals to get the overall effort funded and then start to implement.

Laura

Reminder, tomorrow is the deadline for abstracts for the Denver NSTA regional.

FYI, here are samples of two abstracts Spark has already submitted:

Teaching Computational Thinking: Examples from Weather and Climate Modeling

Computer modeling and computational thinking are critical components of modern science. Workshop participants will try out several activities which illustrate aspects of computational thinking and systems science. Topics include simulations, model resolution,
feedback loops, scaling and the need for supercomputers, limitations of models, uncertainty, and more. Activities will focus on specific examples from weather and climate modeling, but the principles are applicable to many different scientific and engineering
 disciplines.

Computer Games, Simulations, and Virtual Labs for STEM Education

We will present the equivalent of a "literature review" or "consumer's report" of a broad range of computer games, interactive computer-based simulations, and virtual laboratories intended for use in STEM education. This review will cover various science content
disciplines - including the physical sciences, life sciences, and Earth sciences - as well as math and engineering topics. We will present materials from a broad array of sources. We will also direct participants to a web site that provides more in-depth and
extensive listings and reviews of such resources than we can cover during a one-hour presentation. Although there are several good online collections of such resources focused on specific topics (e.g. astronomy education) or from specific sources (e.g. NOAA's
games web site), we believe this web site is the first to present such a collection spanning the gamut of sources and STEM content disciplines. We will briefly demonstrate several games, simulations, and virtual labs during the course of this presentation.
We will also demonstrate some of the educational games and simulations developed by our group at NCAR (the National Center for Atmospheric Research, in Boulder), which focus primarily on Earth science topics.

Hi All,

So sorry for the radio silence on EMP. I have been almost completely focussed on getting my commitments to the upcoming NASA IRIS mission under control. I completely blew the planning for meeting this month.

Early next month we are expecting a baby and that has been playing on my mind/time a lot too. sigh.

Would everyone be suited to a one/two day meeting in early to mid March here? I think we have enough funds to cover a lot of travel and accommodation - I will double check with Joanne before I commit to anything though.

I will have one more canvas to the folks who attended the meeting in Australia about uploading photos and I have yet to pull the professional images taken by the North Queensland Tourist Bureau that (by helping them) we were able to get access to.

Hope that you are all well, staying away from the nasty flu virus and are looking forward to a busy collaboration in 2013.

Cheers,
Scott
