Importance: High

Dear Ruth,

By way of introduction, I am Alistair Hart, Chairperson of the Far North GIS Group Inc. (Fungis), now approaching it's 25th year of incorporation. This volunteer-run, not-for-profit group was established as a local forum for knowledge exchange on Geographic Information Systems and to promote the use and awareness of spatial information technology in far north Queensland. Our web address is: www.fungis.org<https://webmail.trc.qld.gov.au/owa/redir.aspx?C=9e2548c26a014526b85b6d2593bcb349&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.fungis.org>

Kate Russo, eclipse chaser, psychologist and author, and a presenter at our workshop was made aware of your project through a local journalist and suggested I contact you regarding a Smartphones and Spatial Applications workshop being held in Cairns on Friday November 16th, and seek your interest in a representative of the megamovie project participating in this workshop as a presenter, given the relevance of your project with it's smartphone app to our workshop and the possibility of one of your project team members being n the area on November 16th.

The intent of the workshop is to raise awareness of location aware and augmented reality smartphone applications, their relevance in far north Qld and some case-studies from developers of location aware mobile apps and augmented reality apps - stories from the trenches/lessons learned etc.

Perhaps there is an opportunity to promote your megamovie project through this event, our membership and our website? Our media release is intended to go out tomorrow (Thursday in Australia) so your earliest response would be appreciated, so that we can incorporate promotion of your project, if appropriate.

Please feel free to contact me via mobile at any time (+61) 409 885 776, if you would like to discuss this opportunity directly.
Regards, Alistair Hart

This was passed on to me by a JCU journalist who did a press release for me, and this is all the information that I have at the moment.

Hi Sarah,

We spoke last week about the total solar eclipse that will be happening in Queensland on Nov. 14th. I wanted to send you a more complete description of the Eclipse Megamovie that we are planning, but then had to dash off to a conference. In any case, here is more explanation which I hope will help you understand our efforts--

I am writing you from the University of California where I am involved in NSF-funded Astronomy Education and Public Outreach. Several of us here at the Space Sciences Laboratory are working with colleagues from the High Altitude Observatory at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder on a unique project that we think will of interest to people who are able to observe the Nov. 14th solar eclipse. We think it will be an exciting educational opportunity. This is supported by the US National Science Foundation and is free and not a commercial product.

On the project itself:

The Eclipse Megamovie Project brings amateur astronomy to your smartphone! We are creating a free app that will invite people to participate in making an ultra-high time resolution movie of the November solar eclipse. Videos taken by viewers along the eclipse path will be uploaded to our site (not quite live yet) and compiled into one long movie showing the evolution and dynamics of the corona and photospheric prominences. The results will be posted to our site, making it easy for everyone to see the final product that they helped make a reality. It will be a unique opportunity to contribute to a truly memorable solar event. The website will also have educational resources which we hope will give people good background information as well as activities that will enrich the viewing experience.

We are hoping to have lots of viewers along the path contribute their image. This is the first time we have attempted this--the technology end of things is looking good, now we just need is to get the word out and encourage contributions!

I’d be happy to share our website address as soon as it goes live—that should be soon. We are also printing postcards with the intent of sending them to points of contact who might be holding events in Queensland. It would be a great help if the postcards could be distributed locally so the word is spread about the app. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please let me know their address and phone contact.

Sarah, I’d be delighted if you would share some of this with education and/or science colleagues you may have.

Please let me know what else I can send you to facilitate getting the word to the right people!

Best
And thanks for your support of the project,

Ruth
