Dear cyclists,

The Mesa Mile Upgrade Project is beginning this week, and is poised to
bring you a new uphill bike lane, a 4-foot concrete walk-run path on the
downhill side of the road to separate pedestrian and bike traffic, and a
newly paved road and parking lot surface that will last for two decades
or more. I'd like to provide you with a detailed description of what
you can expect during the construction process.

WEEKLY UPDATES on expected transportation impacts from the project will
be posted to http://www2.ucar.edu/emergency and Today @ UCAR on
Mondays. While unexpected circumstances may result in last-minute
changes to the posted schedule, our priority is to provide the most
accurate and up-to-date information possible to our commuters and visitors.

ROAD ACCESS: Safety of cyclists, pedestrians, drivers and construction
crew is our top priority during this project. Cyclist and pedestrian
entry to the road will be provided whenever it is safe to do so.
However, intermittent closures to bike and foot traffic will occur, and
will be announced in advance (unless there is an emergency need for
closure). Vehicle and bicycle traffic will often be limited to one lane
on certain sections of the road, resulting in delays. During these
times, cyclists will need to follow the same traffic rules as vehicles,
waiting for their turn to pass. During times when the road is closed to
cycling, we recommend cyclists meet the NCAR shuttle at the Table Mesa
Shopping Center and transport their bike up the hill via shuttle. For
the shuttle schedule and location map, visit:
http://www.fin.ucar.edu/sass/transport/shuttle-cg.html. Construction
goes through late October.

REGULAR CONSTRUCTION HOURS will be 7:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday through
Friday. Even on days when the road will be closed to bicycles during
construction hours, the road will be open to bike-ped traffic before
7:00 am and after 5:00 pm.

TWO INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS are scheduled to answer your questions. Both
are open to the public.

AUGUST 9 -- 15 TRANSPORTATION IMPACTS
The Mesa Road will be clear for two way vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian
traffic August 9-15. Please note that parking lot construction will
impact vehicle parking. You'll find signs in the parking lot
re-directing vehicle traffic.

I'm personally very please that UCAR will soon offer our cyclists and
pedestrians with dedicated lanes to enjoy the Mesa Road. Although the
next several months will be a challenging time for cyclists, you can
look forward to a better ride in the near future. If you have any
questions about transportation and safety on this project, you can
contact me or Milenda Powers (HESS) at mpowers at ucar.edu or x8625.

All the best,
Kimberly
