<p class="MsoNormal">There have been questions from our communities about if there is support for small instrument operations. Since NSF has invested money in these instruments and these instruments produce data products that are of value to the communities,
it would be sensible to keep some of the instruments in operation to ensure that the science objectives be sustained.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Aeronomy community has diverse ground-based small instruments for scientific research. Some have a long legacy and proven record of scientific value for a broad range of scientific problems. However, there is a lack of mechanisms
to support the sustained operation of such small instruments. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The NSF Aeronomy program is interested in supporting the continuing operation of small instruments beyond its award cycle through a competitive proposal review process. These proposals are expected to have a strong component of instrument
operation and broader impacts through data sharing, in addition to addressing science questions with the proposed instrument operation. A competitive proposal should demonstrate strong broader impacts. The proposals should be focusing on excellence in the
following areas:<o:p></o:p></p>
<ol style="margin-top:0in" start="1" type="1">
<li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Proven scientific values to the aeronomy community and a wide range of scientific problems (evidenced by past publications)<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Reliable operation with minimal O&M cost and repairs.<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Providing training opportunities for students and early career scientists on instrumentation<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Making data readily available to the community with minimal delay and no embargo period.
<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Comprehensive documentation for easy user access.<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0in;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1">Being responsive to additional user needs for special data processing.
