These work-related stressors, together with individual life challenges, can lead to unhealthy conditions that are difficult to navigate. A recent study (NASEM, 2021) found a consistent up to a three-fold increase in negative self-assessment of mental health among students pursuing a graduate degree. Similar studies remain to be carried out among scientists at all career stages.
