the physics of geospace and developing predictive capabilities for space
weather requires a holistic view of all of the interconnected regions of magnetosphere,
ionosphere, thermosphere, and lower atmosphere, and their complex interactions.
Processes occur at local, mesoscale, and global scales, and these scales
interact and feedback on each other. Examples of mesoscale structures include,
but are not limited to: bursty bulk flows, flux transfer events,
Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices, polar cap patches and ionization tongues, mesoscale
waves from the lower atmosphere, etc. These mesoscale structures either
modulate the transfer of energy and/or mass between the local and global
scales, or by themselves impart dynamic variability on the resultant
global structure, thus, potentially profoundly altering the global system’s
behavior. This session solicits contributions from investigations in theory,
modeling, and observations across all regions of geospace, with the goal of
shedding light on the importance of mesoscale processes.
