As student representatives for CEDAR, we are looking forward to this year's joint CEDAR-GEM conference coming up in Des Moines! As part of the longstanding tradition of CEDAR, we will be hosting a joint student day with GEM on June 22nd, the Sunday before the conference. Keeping with the spirit of joint activities, the first half of student day (before 1 pm) will be *STUDENTS ONLY* in attendance as per GEM tradition, with students giving tutorial talks and icebreakers. The afternoon block after lunch will be open to everyone with several parallel blocks with more tailored talks appealing to both early and late career students (and hopefully some postdocs!). Many of the speakers for the student day have been secured already due to travel coordination on the CEDAR side, but we welcome any questions for the speakers in this form and would like to confirm interest from the student community for the various topics. If you have suggestions for speakers we would of course welcome them as alternates given current events or to use in future years, as there is always a need for volunteers to give new talks at student day every year! The survey should take less than 5 minutes to complete and can be found here . We look forward to seeing many of you at the joint conference just around the corner! AGATA (Antarctic Geospace and ATmosphere reseArch) is a coordinated, worldwide effort to monitor, investigate and better understand the physics of the polar atmosphere and the impact of the Sun-Earth interactions on the polar regions. AGATA takes advantage of existing and planned instrumentation in Antarctica, but also in the Arctic and satellite-based observations, and aims for coordinated research efforts and data exchange. This bi-polar perspective will allow the study of significant interhemispheric asymmetries in the atmospheric response observed in the polar regions. To learn more about AGATA, see: https://scar.org/science/research-programmes/agata AGATA is always open to new members. If you want to join the programme, please register using the online form: https://nettskjema.no/a/agata-registration AGATA is currently forming its governance and is looking for candidates for the leaders of the AGATA Working Groups which are the large overarching groups dealing with different couplings in the atmosphere-geospace system (Coupling between atmospheric layers, Coupling within the atmospheric layers, Coupling to geospace), and leaders for Task Groups that will address issues across the groups (Data Management; Scientific Infrastructures; Scientific Campaign Coordination; Equality, Diversity, Inclusion (EDI); Capacity Building, Training and Education; Communication, Dissemination and Outreach). We invite the Early Career Researchers to candidate as well! Even if you do not have much experience in leading such groups, this is the perfect time to start, and you will not be alone! Please send a short informal email to us with a motivation letter explaining what your contribution to AGATA would be (even keywords will be good!). If you were not at the kick-off-meeting and do not have the Rules and Procedures of AGATA which specify the terms of reference for AGATA leadership, please let us know, and we will send them to you by email (they will soon be available on AGATA websites as well). Please send your candidacy until the end of Thursday, April 17th your local time and contribute to forming this exciting research programme. The next step to implement these changes is to solicit feedback from the CEDAR community via an online poll. Please cast your vote here to approve the proposed changes, or not, by Friday May 9th 2025. Thank you for participating in this process! Sincerely, V. Lynn Harvey and Mark Conde, on behalf of the CSSC ---Summary of Proposed Bylaw Changes--- 1. Vet current language for taboo words (e.g., change DEI task force to MATRIX). 2. Add to the bylaws language that we require GCs to provide a quantitative assess community engagement output, e.g., count how many people got involved during the project. 3. Change ?CEDAR Science Thrusts? to ?CEDAR Science Plan? 4. Change the bylaws to reflect that CSSC members may not nominate other CSSC members for science highlights or Prize or Distinguished lectures. 5. Add language that ensures funding for CSSC SRs to support Student Day. ---Details of Proposed Bylaw Changes--- Items #1 and #3 are straightforward. Proposed changes in Red: * Change ?Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion? to ?Merit and Training for Research, Innovation, and eXcellence? * Change DEI to MATRIX (3 instances) * In section 8.2 Demographics: ?These demographics will be used as a metric to evaluate the performance of equity measures undertaken by the CSSC and to inform the CEDAR membership, the CSSC, and relevant funding agencies regarding the composition of the CSSC CEDAR community.? * Change ?Thrusts? to ?Plan? (2 instances) For item #2, below is a snippet of the Bylaws with a proposed change in Red: * In section 6.3 Grand Challenges: ?Each GC workshop will introduce the topic to the CEDAR community in the plenary session in the first year and provide updates in the 2nd and 3rd, and a summary after year 3. GCs are required to provide a quantitative assessment of community engagement each year, such as how many people joined the GC effort over the course of the project.? For item #4, below is a snippet of the Bylaws with a proposed change in Red: * In section 7.1 Prize Lectures: ?The Early-Career CEDAR Prize Lecture, CEDAR Prize Lecture, and Distinguished CEDAR Prize Lecture are solicited every year before the annual CEDAR workshop. The nomination criteria for each award shall be included in the solicitation and be made available on the CEDAR webpage. CSSC members may not nominate themselves or other current CSSC members for science highlights or Prize lectures. The evaluation process is currently decided by the current Prize Lecture task force leader and voting is performed by all voting members of the CSSC.? For item #5, below is a snippet of the Bylaws with a proposed change in Red: * In section 6.1 Student Support: ?Student support to attend the annual CEDAR workshop (if an in person option is available) will be extended to only students based at educational institutions within the USA (including all US states and territories). This support includes registration fees, airfare (up to a potential maximum limit that may vary by year), and housing. In exchange, students are required to present a poster and are encouraged to participate fully in other areas of the workshop. Top priority will be given to funding the two SRs before all other students, to ensure their in-person support of Student Day.? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Data Science (Advanced Statistical and Machine Learning Techniques) Applied to Ionospheric Studies.* *Chairs: Jade Morton (Univ. of Colorado, US), Claudio Cesaroni (INGV), Maria Graciela Molina (FACET-UNT, Argentina)* The ionosphere?s impact on radio propagation is well-established, but accurately modeling these phenomena remains a challenge due to their complexity, many unknown aspects, and the incomplete understanding of ionospheric processes. Over the past few decades, advanced statistical and machine learning techniques have found widespread application across scientific fields, offering powerful tools to address complex physical scenarios that require more flexible and sophisticated modeling. Key advancements include uncovering correlations between diverse data sets and enabling computationally efficient predictions. The application of these techniques to geosciences has evolved from a ?proof of concept? phase to one where real-world research and operational applications are now possible. This session aims to showcase the current and next phase of applying advanced statistical and machine learning methods to ionospheric studies. Presentations will focus on using these techniques for ionospheric characterization, nowcasting and forecasting, and understanding their effects on radio propagation. We invite contributions that explore the full spectrum of data science applied to the ionosphere, from data collection and management to analysis and communication. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, efficient data management, correlation analysis between various ionospheric phenomena, prediction and forecasting of critical ionospheric variables using data-driven models, establishing causal relationships between ionospheric data and other phenomena, and comparing observed versus model-generated ionospheric data. We particularly encourage innovative ideas on how data science and machine learning can reshape the future of ionospheric research.
