JOB OPENING: Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Ionosphere and Geospace Modeling at University of California, Los Angeles

From: Roger Varney (rvarney at atmos.ucla.edu<mailto:rvarney at atmos.ucla.edu>)

The Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in the field of ionosphere and geospace modeling. This position will be part of the Center for Geospace Storms (CGS) NASA DRIVE Science Center. CGS seeks to transform our understanding of space weather by building a physics-based, predictive, community model of storm-time geospace which couples all key regions while treating and resolving critical mesoscale processes. More information on the center is available at https://cgs.jhuapl.edu.

Within the CGS program, this postdoctoral research position will specifically be focused on ionosphere modeling, ionosphere-plasmasphere coupling, and magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. The postdoctoral researcher will work on the unified ionosphere model under development by CGS and its coupling to the GAMERA magnetospheric magnetohydrodynamics model and the WACCM-X atmospheric model. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to contribute to the continued development of these models, conduct scientific studies using the models, and publish scientific papers on the results of these studies.

Applicants for this position should have:

A PhD in space physics, plasma physics, atmospheric science, astronomy, or a related field.

Strong computational skills including substantial experience with FORTRAN programming, numerical methods, and high-performance computing environments.

A proven track-record of scientific publications.

This position will be an in-person appointment at the UCLA campus in Los Angeles, CA, USA. This advertisement will remain open until the position is filled.

How to Apply:

Interested applicants should submit the following material by email to Prof. Roger Varney (rvarney at atmos.ucla.edu<mailto:rvarney at atmos.ucla.edu>):

A personal statement describing research and training objectives (one to two pages).

A current curriculum vitae (CV), including a complete list of publications.

Please provide names and contact information for at least 3 professional references. Your references may or may not be contacted for letters of recommendation.

For questions about the position please contact Prof. Roger Varney.
