Dear colleagues,
We would like to invite you to submit abstracts to our 2024 IHDEA/DASH
meeting session on "*Open Validation in Heliophysics and Space Weather
Modeling: Progress, Challenges, and the Path Forward".* The 2024 IHDEA/DASH
meeting will be held at European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC), near Madrid
Spain from 14 to 18 October 2024. This will be an hybrid meeting.

*Open Validation in Heliophysics and Space Weather Modeling: Progress,
Challenges, and the Path Forward*
*Conveners: Martin Reiss, Chiu Wiegand*
To drive innovation in heliophysics and space weather awareness, we need a
clear understanding of our current modeling capabilities. This
understanding can be achieved through comprehensive, consistent, and
reproducible validation procedures. Open validation, which involves
defining standards for validation metadata, metrics, and preparing
observational data, is a complex research task that demands expert
knowledge. This task depends on a synergistic effort between software
developers and scientists. By combining scene-setting presentations and
discussions in this session, we aim to identify progress, challenges, and
the way forward in open model validation. We specifically welcome
contributions that highlight:
- Recent progress and lessons learned in validating heliophysics and
space weather models
- Software and tool developments that facilitate open validation
- Open-source development of metrics and validation procedures
- Metadata needed in an open validation effort
- Challenges and lessons learned in finding, obtaining, and preparing
data for validation efforts.
Best regards,
Dr. Martin Reiss (martin.a.reiss at outlook.com)
Chiu Wiegand (chiu.wiegand at nasa.gov)
