International participation is the key to our community?s success, and all ranges of experience are welcome. See the web site for this year?s special topics, but the DASH meeting welcomes submissions on any topic related to Heliophysics software and data. Following DASH, the annual meeting of the International Heliophysics Data Environment Alliance (IHDEA) will be 17-18 Oct 2024, also at ESAC in Madrid. The focus is collaborative efforts and working groups across countries and agencies * Distributed science platforms and cloud-based research data in the cloud * Accessibility and interoperability * Open science * Metadata for data, simulation, model and AI/ML datasets * Working groups reports * Space agencies/institutions reports Sign up at the same place: https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/ihdea/ihdea-dash-2024 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The May 2024 storm provides an exemplary event. The remit of the special issue is thus fairly broad to cover a large range of topics: - solar activity, including the active regions that generated the solar flares and CMEs - solar wind, IMF, and energetic particle observations near the Sun, at 1 AU, and beyond - inner magnetosphere response: radiation belts, plasma populations, and magnetic field at geosynchronous distance - ionospheric response: plasma bubble, ionospheric irregularities, and impacts on Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) - thermospheric response: satellite orbital drag at low-Earth orbit - auroral observations around the world (optical instruments and naked eye) - ground magnetic field response, effects on technologies and observations of Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs). We encourage submissions that compare many local/global events in May 2024 with historical events (e.g., March 1989, the Halloween events of 2003, St. Patrick?s Day storms of 2013 and 2015). We also encourage studies focusing on the interaction of the main CME with other planets and solar wind bodies (moons) and other regions of the heliosphere. Contributions focusing on simulation studies are also encouraged. Finally, we encourage submissions with focus on predictions of extreme geomagnetic storms for the remaining period of solar cycle 25 and beyond. Thus, the main goal of this Research Topic is to advance our understanding of extreme geomagnetic storms including the comparison of the May 2004 storm with other historical events. We wish to name that event as the Extreme Gannon Geomagnetic Storm of May 2024 after Dr. Jennifer Gannon, who unfortunately passed away a week before the event. This Research Topic is also a tribute to the life and work of Jenn, who made significant contributions to the field of space science and space weather in her regrettably abbreviated career. The submission deadline is 28th February, but we aim to publish relevant research much quicker. The submission page is open now. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss your submission. This understanding can be achieved through comprehensive, consistent, and reproducible validation procedures. Open validation, which involves defining standards for validation metadata, metrics, and preparing observational data, is a complex research task that demands expert knowledge. This task depends on a synergistic effort between software developers and scientists. By combining scene-setting presentations and discussions in this session, we aim to identify progress, challenges, and the way forward in open model validation. We specifically welcome contributions that highlight: - Recent progress and lessons learned in validating heliophysics and space weather models - Software and tool developments that facilitate open validation - Open-source development of metrics and validation procedures - Metadata needed in an open validation effort - Challenges and lessons learned in finding, obtaining, and preparing data for validation efforts. The deadline for full consideration is October 1, 2024. The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Clemson University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the field of Space Physics, to start in 2025. The position is initially funded by the NSF Faculty Development in geoSpace Science (FDSS) program. The Department is seeking applications from individuals with expertise in Magnetosphere-Ionosphere-Atmosphere coupling, from either modeling and/or data analysis/experiment. The successful candidate is expected to complement the atmosphere-ionosphere expertise of the existing space physics group by adding magnetosphere-ionosphere expertise and to educate the next generation of leaders in the space sciences. For full consideration, applications should be submitted by October 1, 2024. Review will continue until the position is filled. More information about the position and how to apply can be found at http://apply.interfolio.com/148566 Please email Xian Lu at xianl at clemson.edu for additional information. =============================== Xian Lu Associate Professor Department of Physics and Astronomy Clemson University, Clemson, SC 29634 xianl at clemson.edu 864-656-4204 http://xianl.people.clemson.edu -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... ASSW 2025 organizers are now accepting abstracts for the Fourth International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP IV) Summit, which will take place during ASSW on 25-28 March 2025, immediately following the ASSW 2025 business and community meetings (20-24 March 2025). Several sessions directly related to geospace/space weather research are planned, including: # 1.4. Exploring connections between space weather and the Earth's atmosphere in the polar regions # 1.6. Unraveling Space Weather: Impacts and Predictions # 2.4. Science for Resilient Communications and Sensing in a Rapidly Changing Arctic Full session descriptions can be found here: https://assw.info/program/icarp-iv-summit/icarp-iv-summit-sessions/icarp-iv-summit-sessions-accepting-abstracts Many other ICARP IV sessions are also relevant to interdisciplinary collaborations related to geospace/space weather research, and an ASSW 2025 business meeting is planned to discuss how the geospace/space weather research community can become more directly involved in IPY5 planning. Abstract submissions are invited through 30 September 2024. Please visit the ASSW 2025 / ICARP IV Summit Website ( https://assw.info/program/icarp-iv-summit) for the full list of available sessions, submission guidelines, and instructions on how to submit your abstract. It?s particularly important for CEDAR community science to be represented at ASSW 2025 as it will set the tone for future research directions and international planning related to IPY5. Please consider submitting an abstract and help make IPY5 a success! -- Michael Hartinger Research Scientist, Space Science Institute Associate Researcher, UCLA -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
