We would like to encourage you and your colleagues to present your research at the 18th AOGS 2021 virtual session:
AS03 on Passive and Active Sensing of the Chemistry and Dynamics of the Middle and Upper Atmosphere
Session Description: The Earth's atmosphere above the stratopause (~50 km) maintains a balance between solar radiative and particle forcing from above, and the action of atmospheric waves rising up from below. Quantifying how these forces drive the general circulation of the atmosphere and control the chemical balance and its temporal and spatial variability is crucial to understanding how composition, momentum, and energy couple vertically and horizontally in the atmosphere and ionosphere. However, this region cannot be directly accessed by balloons and satellites, and sporadic rocket observations are typically limited to altitudes above 100 km where vehicle interaction effects subside. Thus, remote sensing and in-situ sampling are the primary tools used to understand the aeronomy of this region. This session will look at recent results from ground-based as well as in-situ and satellite-borne observations, the new sensors and mission concepts currently being planned or under development, and the impact of their integrated results on our understanding of the middle and upper atmosphere. These observations include, but are not limited to airglow, microwave, lidar, radar, and in-situ sampling of the composition, chemistry, and dynamics of the neutral and ionized atmosphere. It will also include laboratory and modelling studies that complement and corroborate these observations.
The meeting will be held virtually from August 1st – August 6th, 2021. Abstract submissions are open and due February 23rd, 2021. For details on the AOGS Meeting and abstract submission, please visit
