The CEDAR Science Steering Committee sends its hearty congratulations to Prof. John Meriwether on his designation as an American Geophysical Union Fellow (Class of 2019)

John is a Professor Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy at Clemson University and a Distinguished Research Professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology. He received his BS in Chemistry from MIT in 1964 and his PhD in Physics from the University of Maryland (with William Benesch) in 1970 on the spectroscopy of nitrogen and oxygen emissions in aurora. John then moved on to several postdoc and research positions at Goddard (with Jim Heppner), Michigan (with Paul Hays), Arecibo (with Jim Walker) and Phillips Lab where he developed, deployed, and operated lidar and Fabry-Perot instruments in many field campaigns. In 1991, he joined the Faculty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Clemson University from where he retired in July 2018. John's many years of field work resulted in 200+ papers and 250+ conference presentations. He served the aeronomy and CEDAR community in many capacities, as NSF Geospace Facilities Program Director (2015-2018), as NSF Aeronomy Program Director (2000), and as a member of several steering committees including CEDAR and Arecibo, to name just a few. John continues to help out where needed as NSF Expert (since 2018) and -of course- as a physicist researching thermospheric winds and electrodynamics.
