Position Description
The Department of Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences of Hampton University invites applications for a research assistant professor position for thermospheric and mesospheric studies. The scientific subjects include: long-term trends in the mesosphere and thermosphere, residual circulations in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere and geomagnetic storm impacts on the thermosphere and mesosphere. The successful candidate will make use of TIMED (SABER and GUVI) and AIM datasets, and NCAR WACCM-X and TIME-GCM models to investigate the mesosphere-thermosphere-ionosphere coupling.

The successful applicant will be expected to perform the duties of a research assistant professor, including the publication of original research, attending conferences and workshops (which includes domestic and international travel), submission of proposals, co-advising graduate students, collaborations with scientists at institutions such as NASA, NCAR, UC Santa Cruz and support of the SABER and AIM missions. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in space physics, atmospheric sciences, or a related field and preferably will have completed a post-doctoral assignment. The appointment is for three years, with a possible renewal based on successful applicant performance and funding resources. Benefits are competitive and salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience.

The successful applicant will work primarily with Prof. Jia Yue and Endowed Prof. James Russell. Applicants will need to submit a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a brief statement of research interests, and the names of three professional references. Essential Functions
Data analysis utilizing programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, and/or IDL. Presentation of results at professional meetings. Publication of results via peer-reviewed journal papers. Occasional domestic/international travel.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Space Physics or Atmospheric Sciences. Background in thermospheric/ mesospheric physics. Experience in data analysis using current programming languages.
