Post-Doctoral Associate Position in Tropospheric Windprofiler Research

A one year post-doctoral associate position is available immediately under the supervision of Dr. Wayne Hocking in the Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, University of Western Ontario, Canada.

The successful candidate will analyze data recorded by windprofiler radars and determine correlations between vertical and horizontal velocities, with the aim of inferring the anisotropy of turbulent scatterers at 3 metre scales, as well as the mean tilts of the scatterers under various weather conditions and at different radar sites. Such data will ultimately lead to better understanding of the accuracy of vertical velocities measured with the radars. Additionally, the incumbent will also be responsible for data archival and storage of data from the radars. Additional tasks related to these primary responsibilities may be allocated as needed. It is expected that the work will lead to published papers, on which the successful candidate will be a co-author.

The successful candidate will possess:
• A Ph.D. degree in Physics, with emphasis on weather studies. However, students with a degree in applied mathematics, computing or statistics may also be given consideration. Applicants without experience in weather radar may also apply, provided that they have the requisite experience in computing and analysis listed below.
• Previous experience working with and analyzing large datasets
• Expertise in both windows and unix operating systems (at the command-line level)
• Familiarity with at least one of the languages Python or Fortran- preferably both. Matlab is not a suitable substitute.
• ability to read various types of data-files, including binary and ascii
• Good knowledge of statistical procedures and methods of determination of statistical reliability. Knowledge of Stokes parameters would be bonus, but is not mandatory.
• Good oral communication and technical writing skills
• Ability to work independently and alone as needed.

Rate of Pay: $37,500 per annum for a period of 1 year from start-date. No funds are available to help the successful applicant travel to the University of Western Ontario, or to assist with moving costs, but the University does have extensive low-cost, good-quality housing opportunities on site.

Applications will be reviewed as received until the position is filled, up to and including February 28, 2017. Applications beyond that date will not be assessed, but if no suitable applicant is found in that time, the advertisement may be re-issued. All applications will be reviewed, and suitable ones will result in the applicant being contacted by skype by Prof. Hocking. If applicants have not received feedback by Feb. 28, 2017, they should assume that the application was not successful. Please send a letter of application including a one-page description of research experience and interests, an updated curriculum vitae, and names & contact information of three referees to: whocking at uwo.ca
