UCP’s COSMIC program is providing an opportunity for graduate and both
junior- and senior-level undergraduate students, who are U.S. citizens or
U.S. permanent residents, to attend and participate in the 3rd
International Conference on GPS Radio Occultation (ICGPSRO), to be held in
Taipei, Taiwan on 9–11 March 2016. The ICGPSRO focuses on the research and
application of GPS RO in meteorology, climate, and space weather. Students
with research interests aligned with these topics are encouraged to apply
for travel support. The ICGPSRO will be held in conjunction with the 10th
FORMOSAT-3 / COSMIC Launch Anniversary Celebration. Along with the
workshop, the trip will include student activities, which may include
visits to Taiwan’s National Space Organization and National Central
University, as well as sightseeing in Taipei.
The FORMOSAT-3 / COSMIC mission, a joint Taiwan/U.S. project launched in
2006, currently provides around 1,200 daily radio occultation profiles in
the neutral atmosphere, electron density profiles and total electron
content arcs in the ionosphere, GPS scintillation observations, and TIP
radiance products. With the continued operation of FORMOSAT-3 / COSMIC and
the execution of the FORMOSAT-7 / COSMIC-2 mission, radio occultation data
will continue to be available to support research and operations for many
more years to come. With nearly an order of magnitude more RO data expected
to be available from COSMIC-2, unprecedented research opportunities will
open up for hurricane analysis and prediction, Madden-Julian Oscillation
(MJO), and climate processes, just to name a few.
Application deadline: 13 November 2015
