Hello Everyone,
This is just a quick reminder of the photo contest being held this year for
the CEDAR community. Below is the original email sent out January 2nd.
Good luck to all of our contestants,
Lindsay Goodwin, CEDAR Student Representative
Hello Colleagues,
The CEDAR Science Steering Committee (CSSC) wants to expand the visual
aspect of our community by building an image repository. I am pleased to
announce that to start this process there will be a photo contest at this
year's CEDAR meeting! There will be three categories, and a winner for each
category: 1. Instruments and landmarks related to space physics, 2. People
of the CEDAR community, and 3. CEDAR physics in action, e.g. sprites,
lightning, noctilucent clouds, and so on (we hope to have more diversity
than just hundreds of the same ol’ aurora shots). All photos will be made
available, and the winning photos will be prominently featured (either
online or in a location to be determined).
*Rules and important information:*
· Each photo can only be a maximum of 25MB
· For each photo, the photographer must specify the approximate date,
location, category, and subject of the photograph
· Contest entries must be submitted to cedarphotocontest at gmail.com by June
21 (the day of the student workshop)
· Since the main goal of this contest is to build up an image repository,
a contestant can enter as many images as they would like in any category
· Only people who have attended a CEDAR Workshop in the past or are
planning to attend the 2015 Workshop are eligible
· The winners will be announced on the last day of the CEDAR workshop
· By entering this contest, the photographer agrees to the rules and
regulations outlined below (I apologize for the heavy legal jargon below,
but copyright laws are tricky).
Outside of the contest, or after the contest is over, we would welcome the
submission of photos that show off CEDAR science, as long as the submitter
give the CSSC non-exclusive rights to use those photos as described below.
Please email cedarphotocontest at gmail.com, Josh Semeter (jls at bu.edu), or
myself (lindsaygoodw at gmail.com) if you have any questions.
Kind regards,
Lindsay Goodwin, Student Representative

----------* RULES AND REGULATIONS* ----------
*RELEASES*
If the photograph contains any material or elements that are not owned by
the entrant and/or which are subject to the rights of third parties, and/or
if any persons appear in the photograph, the entrant is responsible for
obtaining, prior to submission of the photograph, any and all releases and
consents necessary to permit the exhibition and use of the photograph in
the manner set forth in these Official Rules without additional
compensation. If any person appearing in any photograph is under the age of
majority, the signature of a parent or legal guardian is required on each
release.
Upon the request of the CEDAR Science Steering Committee (CSSC), each
entrant must be prepared to provide (faxed/emailed within seven (7)
calendar days of receipt of the CSSC's request) a signed release from all
persons who appear in the photograph submitted, and/or from the owner of
any material that appears in the photograph entry, authorizing the CSSC and
its licensees ("Authorized Parties") to reproduce, distribute, display, and
create derivative works of the entry in connection with the Contest and
promotion of the Contest, in any media now or hereafter known. All releases
must be in a form acceptable to the CSSC. Failure to provide such releases
upon request may result in disqualification at any time during the Contest
and selection of an alternate winner.
Similarly, upon the CSSC's request, each entrant must be prepared to
provide (faxed/emailed within seven (7) calendar days of receipt of the
CSSC's request) a signed written license from the copyright owner of any
sculpture, artwork, or other copyrighted material that appears in the
photograph entry, authorizing any Authorized Party to reproduce,
distribute, display, and create derivative works of the entry in connection
with the Contest and promotion of the Contest, in any media now or
hereafter known. All releases must be in a form acceptable to the CSSC.
Failure to provide such releases upon request may result in
disqualification and selection of an alternate winner.
*LICENSE*
By entering the Contest, all entrants grant an irrevocable, perpetual,
worldwide non-exclusive license to the CSSC, to reproduce, distribute,
display and create derivative works of the entries (along with a name
credit) in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to:
Display at a potential exhibition of winners; publication of a book
featuring select entries in the Contest; or publication online highlighting
entries or winners of the Contest. Display or publication of any entry on a
CEDAR website does not indicate the entrant will be selected as a winner.
The CSSC will not be required to pay any consideration or seek any approval
in connection with such use. Additionally, by entering, each entrant grants
the CSSC unrestricted right to use all statements made in connection with
the Contest, and pictures or likenesses of Contest entrants, or choose not
to do so, at their sole discretion. The CSSC will not be required to pay
any consideration or seek any approval in connection with such use.
*LIMITATION OF LIABILITY*
By entering this Contest, all entrants agree to release, discharge, and
hold harmless the CSSC and its partners, affiliates, subsidiaries,
advertising agencies, agents and their employees, officers, directors, and
representatives from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of their
participation in this Contest or any Contest-related activities and the
acceptance and use, misuse, or possession of any prize awarded hereunder.
The CSSC assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption,
deletion, defect, or delay in operation or transmission; communications
line failure; theft or destruction of or unauthorized access to Contest
entries or entry forms; or alteration of entries or entry forms. The CSSC
is not responsible for any problems with or technical malfunction of any
telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers or providers,
computer equipment, software, failure of any email entry to be received on
account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at
any website, human errors of any kind, or any combination thereof,
including any injury or damage to entrants' or any other persons' computers
related to or resulting from participation, uploading or downloading of any
materials related to in this Contest.
