Scientist responsible for international activities at Space Weather
Centre at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Tromsø Geophysical
Observatory, Norway
Application deadline: 7. August 2014
Ref. 2014/3355
The University of Tromsø (UiT) has a vacancy for a Scientist as a member
of the staff of Tromsø Geophysical Observatory (TGO). The goal is to
establish, operate and expand a Space Weather Centre at the University
of Tromsø. The Space Weather Centre will be organized as a
self-contained department of Tromsø Geophysical Observatory and will
operate according to a tailored mandate. Officially, the Space weather
staff will be subordinate to the TGO leadership and steering committee,
but will, in practice, be trusted with a considerable degree of
autonomy. However, it is expected that the space weather related
observations made at TGO will be a backbone of services provided by the
new centre. It is also expected that future strategies of the centre be
laid in cooperation and conjunction with the observatory activities.
The establishment of the Space Weather Centre is expected to be
strategically in the framework of TGO's involvement in the ESA SSA
program. TGO is Expert Service Centre Coordinator for Geomagnetic
Conditions within this program and the successful applicant is expected
to be heavily involved with the ESC definition and development as per
P2-SWE-1. The current position will have main responsibility for the
work related to international space weather tasks such as obligations in
the SSA program. It is expected that the position will work actively in
leading TGO into new international collaborations on space weather
securing funding for his/her own position and the expansion of the Space
Weather Centre.
