Session Title: Impact of the Substorm Concept on Space Plasma Research

Session Description: This year 2014 marks the 50th anniversary on the inception of substorm concept. It is first revealed by episodic auroral activities in the polar regions. Substorm phenomena manifest the fundamental processes in space plasma dynamics and substorm-like disturbances have been found in many space plasma regions throughout our solar system. For example, such disturbances have been discovered in other planetary magnetospheres. The underlying physical processes responsible for substorms on Earth have been compared with those for solar flares and coronal mass ejections. This concept has motivated numerous studies on impulsive plasma phenomena in the investigation of solar terrestrial relations. This session invites research related to the impact of the substorm concept on present and past research efforts through data analysis, theory, and simulations of outstanding space plasma problems.
