October 16-18, 2012, Mt Washington Conference Center, Baltimore, MD, Workshop on
Understanding the Ionosphere, Thermosphere, Mesosphere Over a Solar Cycle and Longer

For over ten years, the NASA
Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere-Energetics-Dynamics (TIMED) satellite
mission has provided unprecedented spatial and temporal coverage of the
Ionosphere, Thermosphere, and Mesosphere (ITM). An integral part of the
overall TIMED mission also includes synergistic collaborations with the US
and international space missions and groundbased observational and
modeling communities, including the NSF Coupling Energetics and Dynamics
of Atmospheric Regions (CEDAR) program. Numerous collaborative partners
continue to provide complementary measurements in both time and space to
TIMED observations and conduct joint ITM studies. For the first time, we
have been able to make systematic global observations of the structure and
variability of the ITM system over nearly a solar cycle. TIMED has
provided a climatological view of the upper atmosphere basic structure and
pictures of its dramatic response to weather-like geomagnetic and solar
disturbances as well as long-term climatic changes. Significant progress
has been made that has also raised many outstanding questions straddling
the traditional boundaries of ITM science. This workshop will highlight
TIMED's continued success and focus on our significant findings about ITM
structures and processes and the open questions that are raised by TIMED
and other research missions, instruments, and modelers focusing over the
last ten years. All papers on TIMED research are welcome, particularly
papers on observational and modeling results that highlight findings over
the last decade, improved insights into fundamental processes, and new
questions in ITM science.

There will be numerous invited speakers on topics of interests and
proceedings of the symposium will be collected and published. Detailed
venue and programs will be releases in the next two weeks.

Please contact Sam Yee (sam.yee at jhuapl.edu) or 240-228-6206 for further
information.

From Anatoly V. Streltsov (streltsa at erau.edu).

The Department of Physical Sciences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
(ERAU) at Daytona Beach, FL invites applicants for 2013 Ph.D. graduate study
program in the field of space plasma physics. The program includes full funding
(20,000 USD stipend plus free tuition), training and education of up to 3
candidates in the fields of space plasma physics, magnetohydrodynamics, and
electromagnetism. It focuses on preparation of young scientists for development
of comprehensive geophysical models and highly efficient numerical algorithms
describing electromagnetic waves and wave-particle interactions in the Earth’s
magnetosphere and the ionosphere and utilizing and developing techniques for
analyzing single and multi-spacecraft data. Students will apply results from
their educational/research projects for interpretation of geophysical data
collected by ground stations and satellites in several high-profile NASA and NSF
programs, such as Space Weather Forecast, Radiation Belts Remediation and Active
Ionospheric Experiments. Currently the Aviation and Aerospace Engineering
Program at Embry-Riddle is ranked #1 in the USA by US News, and the Physics
Department provides excellent conditions for studying modern geophysics
including a high-performance computational facility on campus. For further
details about ERAU, Physics Department and our Ph.D. program visit
http://www.erau.edu and
http://daytonabeach.erau.edu/coas/physical-sciences/index.html. For specific
questions regarding this program contact Profs. Anatoly V. Streltsov
(streltsa at erau.edu) or Katariina Nykyri (nykyrik at erau.edu), Department of
Physical Sciences, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, 600 S. Clyde Morris
Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL 32114, USA.
