(1) CEDAR Strategic Plan Document.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Jeffrey P Thayer (Jeffrey.Thayer at colorado.edu).
CEDAR Community,
After much effort by many within the CEDAR community, the CEDAR Strategic Plan
has reached a level for community distribution. The document is still in draft
form and requires more complete editing and illustration. However, it is
important that the CEDAR community see this draft and prepare to adopt this
document for the future direction of CEDAR.
The document can be found on the CEDAR wiki at :
http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu/wiki/images/e/eb/CEDAR_October_V9.2.pdf and
ancillary material and information can be found at
http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu/wiki/index.php/Community:CEDAR_Strategic_Plan
Comments and feedback on the document are welcome. Your comments can be
directed to Jeff Thayer, jeffrey.thayer at colorado.edu , or through the CEDAR
forum page at: http://cedarweb.hao.ucar.edu/wiki/index.php/Special:AWCforum/
The document will be frozen by December 1 and the effort will shift into
publication and distribution.
Regards,
Jeff

(2) 9-12 May 2011, AGU Chapman Conference on "Modeling the
Ionosphere/Thermosphere System", Charleston, SC - abstracts due 19 January 2011.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Joe Huba (huba at ppd.nrl.navy.mil))and Shermonta Grant (sgrant at agu.org).
The science focus of the conference is to better understand the physics of the
coupled ionosphere/thermosphere (IT) system. This system is controlled largely
by local ion-neutral processes but there can be strong forcings from below
(e.g., tides, gravity waves, upper atmosphere winds) and above (e.g., solar EUV,
high latitude heating from precipitating electrons, and region 1 and 2 current
systems) that impact its behavior. Thus, it is not an isolated system but can be
thought of as a transition layer between the Earth's atmosphere and space;
viewed from this vantage point, it is clear that it plays a vital role in
forecasting space weather. Given the importance of the IT system, as well as its
fundamental role as a laboratory to study ion-neutral coupling dynamics, it is
timely to have a Chapman Conference to address the current state of the existing
models and the future modeling needs of the IT community.

(3) Tenure Track Space Physics Faculty Position at Embry-Riddle for Fall 2011 -
applications will be reviewed immediately.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From John Olivero (oliveroj at erau.edu).
The Department of Physical Sciences at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
invites applications for a Tenure Track position at the Assistant Professor
level in all areas of Space Physics. Applicants in the area of Magnetospheric
Physics are particularly encouraged to apply. We expect to have this position
filled for Fall 2011.
We are seeking a well-qualified individual for a combined workload of research
and teaching in our academic programs. The department has one of the leading
undergraduate Engineering Physics programs in the US and is aggressively growing
its research activities through its Ph.D. program in Engineering Physics. Other
programs supported by the department are BS-Space Physics and MS-Engineering
Physics. We also offer support courses in physics, chemistry,
astronomy/astrophysics, biology, and environmental science.
The successful candidate will have a strong record of research that will
continue here plus applicable teaching experience. Applicants should have an
earned Ph.D. in one of the disciplines indicated above. For additional
information, please see: http://www.erau.edu/omni/db/academicorgs/dbpsd/index.html.
The position is open until filled, however we will begin reviewing applications
immediately. Interested candidates should send (1) a letter of application, (2)
a full CV with a list of all publications, (3) any additional information on
teaching experience and a statement of teaching philosophy, and (4) the names,
telephone numbers and e-mail addresses of at least four references to:

complemented by our commitment to building a culturally diverse community. We
actively encourage women, people with disabilities, and members of minority
groups to apply.

(4) REU Summer Assistantships in Radio Astronomy, Solar System Studies &
Atmospheric Sciences at Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico due 1 February 2011.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Jill Tarbell (jtm14 at cornell.edu).
NAIC will conduct a summer student program, funded by the National Science
Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program, at the
Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico during Summer 2011. Areas of research
include radio astronomy, solar system studies and atmospheric sciences. Students
interested in electronic instrumentation or computer science are also encouraged
to apply. The assistantships, which include a stipend, on-site lodging and
round trip airline tickets, are conducted during a flexible ten week period
beginning in June. Students will have opportunities to visit many of the
beautiful sites of Puerto Rico, which is a U.S. Commonwealth.
Undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and who will be
enrolled in a bachelor's degree program (part or full time) during Fall 2011
are eligible. In addition, NAIC anticipates supporting one or two positions for
first- or second-year graduate students who are enrolled in U.S. institutions
(non-U.S. citizens may apply). Application forms are available at
http://www.naic.edu/science/summer_set.htm or by email request to Jill Tarbell
at jtm14 at cornell.edu. Applications must be received by February 1, 2011. EOE/AAE

(5) Jicamarca International Research Experience Program - JIREP 2011 for 10
weeks in summer - applications due 31 January 2011.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
From Jorge Chau (jchau at jro.igp.gob.pe) and Angela Calle (jirep at jro.igp.gob.pe).
The students will work with staff engineers and scientists on projects related
to ongoing research or instrumentation development programs. Research may be
conducted in neutral atmospheric and ionospheric science as well as radar/radio
instrumentation and software development. Given its location, frequency of
operation, and array system, most Jicamarca Radio Observatory's research
capabilities are unique. Besides the unique research capabilities where students
are welcomed to propose and run their own experiments, Jicamarca offers a good
opportunity to get hands-on-experience on different aspects of radar systems,
from changing the antenna connections, improving RF components of the system, to
develop sophisticated acquisition and processing programs. A side benefit of the
program is that students will get to know Peru, heir to ancient cultures and
rich colonial tradition.
This program is offered to junior/senior undergraduate and/or first and second
year graduate students and will cover the travel expenses (to and from Lima) as
well as a reasonable stipend. Given that the Observatory is located outside Lima
city, transportation will be provided.
Application and recommendation forms are available at http://jro.igp.gob.pe/jirep/
* Application deadline: January 31st, 2011
* Decision: February 20th, 2011
* Starting date: Anytime after May 10th until June 20th
* Duration: 10 weeks
