The NCAR Advanced Research Computing portal will be rolled out in just a few days as the new home of the Daily Bulletin, a quick way to check on HPC system status, and a link to the NCAR Research Computing help center. That’s just the start!<br><br>
</div><div>Planned future additions to the ARC portal include integration of the Resource Allocation System for submitting allocation requests, Systems Accounting Manager reporting, and user documentation from an expanded NCAR Research Computing knowledge base.<br><br>

<div>Additional nodes in the Casper cluster are now accessible using the PBS Pro workload manager as the migration from Slurm to PBS continues. In addition to the 64 new high-throughput computing (HTC) nodes announced recently, about half of the cluster’s other nodes have been transitioned as of today. PBS now allows for single-node or smaller jobs on:<br><br>
</div><ul>
<li>7 CPU-only nodes</li>
<li>4 GP100 GPU nodes</li>
<li>2 4xV100 GPU nodes</li>
<li>3 8xV100 GPU nodes<br><br>
</li>
</ul><div>The rest of the Casper CPU-only and GPU nodes will move from Slurm to PBS on Wednesday, April 7. At that point all Casper jobs will be submitted via PBS, including jobs with tasks on multiple nodes. <div>Casper users will notice some service changes as the cluster is migrated from Slurm to the PBS job scheduler over the next couple of weeks. The first change involves the <strong>vncmgr</strong> script, which allows users to start VNC sessions on Casper nodes. This script uses Slurm now, but will be migrated to PBS on Monday, March 29. Changes will be minimal, but <a href="https://www2.cisl.ucar.edu/resources/computational-systems/casper/using-remote-desktops-casper-vnc#customizing">custom scheduler options</a> must be specified in PBS format after that date.<br><br>
</div><div>As part of broader upgrades planned for the JupyterHub service, the batch spawner for Casper also will be switched from Slurm to PBS. We will release more details on accessing the upgraded interface soon. Once Slurm is decommissioned on April 7, all JupyterHub batch jobs (on both Cheyenne and Casper) will be scheduled using PBS.<br><br>
</div><div>No changes to the FastX service are expected due to the migration to PBS. <br><br>

<div>The Casper system is switching from the Slurm scheduler to PBS Pro, which means workflow changes for the majority of users. To help with the transition, the CISL Consulting Services Group will present an online tutorial at 9 a.m. MDT on Tuesday, March 30. The tutorial will cover a variety of PBS Pro scheduling topics for Casper users. Users who have experience with PBS on Cheyenne are encouraged to attend as well, as there are a few differences between the PBS deployments on each system. Topics will include:<br><br>

<li>Batch and interactive scheduling with qsub, qsubcasper, execcasper, and JupyterHub</li>
<li>Starting remote desktops with vncmgr</li>
<li>Optimal use of resource requests to provision CPUs, GPUs, and memory</li>
<li>Types of PBS jobs and usage limits</li>
<li>Querying job data using qstat and qhist<br><br>
</li>
