The goals of the </span>ACCESS project are to evaluate climatic impacts in the Arctic on marine transportation, fisheries, marine mammals and the extraction of hydrocarbons for the next 20 years, with particular attention to environmental sensitivities and sustainability. The Arctic is a region undergoing unprecedented changes. The work at LATMOS will focus on quantification of the impact of local emissions (shipping, resource extraction) and remote mid-latitude pollution on present-day and future air composition in the Arctic. The LATMOS group will also participate in an aircraft campaign which will provide data on emissions and plume dispersion from shipping and oil/gas extraction. The post-doctoral work will focus on global and north-hemispheric scales, and links with regional modeling work.</font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="4"><span style="color: black; ">- MACC-II (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate): <a href="http://www.gmes-atmosphere.eu/gmes-atmosphere.eu">http://www.gmes-atmosphere.eu/gmes-atmosphere.eu</a> – planned to start early 2012 for 3 years. The goal of MACC-II </span>is to provide state of the art simulations of atmospheric composition for recent years using models run on the operational system at ECMWF, as a well as results for monitoring present conditions and provision of chemical forecasts, for example, for field campaigns. The available position will focus on the quantification, harmonization and evaluation of surface emissions at the global and regional scales, the participation in a pilot study of the use of inverse modeling techniques to improve emissions in the context of the MACC-II modeling work. The LATMOS group will also participate in the development of a new emissions database for atmospheric constituents, and will work with other European groups on interconnections between different databases for emissions, observations and modeling results.</font></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><span style="color: black; "><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="4">Qualifications and requirements for the positions:<o:p></o:p></font></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><span style="color: black; "><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="4">- PhD in atmospheric sciences or in a similar field<o:p></o:p></font></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-indent: 1pt; "><span style="color: black; "><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="4">- Experience in atmospheric chemistry modeling / analysis of atmospheric observations / surface emissions<o:p></o:p></font></span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-indent: 1pt; "><span style="color: black; "><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="4">- Programming skills in Unix/Linux, Fortran, and scientific visualization programs (Matlab, IDL or NCL)<o:p></o:p></font></span></p><div style="text-align: left; margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 18pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-indent: -17pt; "><span style="color: black; "><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="4">- Good English language skills<o:p></o:p></font></span></div><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-indent: 1pt; "><span style="color: black; "><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="4">- Willingness to work in an international framework, and to attend the different meetings organized within each project.<o:p></o:p></font></span></p><div style="text-align: left; margin-top: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-left: 35pt; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-indent: -17pt; "><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="4"><br></font></div><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; "><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial" size="4"><span style="color: black; ">Review of the applications will start mid-September 2011, and will continue until the positions are filled.
