<FONT FACE="Verdana, Helvetica, Arial"><SPAN STYLE='font-size:11pt'>The Wind Energy Division at Risø DTU, Technical University of Denmark, is seeking a PhD student to develop and verify forecasting techniques of wind turbine icing conditions. <BR>
<BR>
Wind farms located in cold climates may experience significant time or frequency of icing events. These events result in reduced energy production and other undesirable side effects, such as ice throw, increased noise, fatigue loading and special operation and maintenance, that need to be considered when siting and operating a wind farm in a cold climate. <BR>
<BR>
The successful candidate will work on forecasting the occurrence of icing conditions and their duration from the output of weather forecast models and validate the results against observations. The work involves both finding the most appropriate parameterizations and model setup and the development of a physical/statistical model to convert the forecasted model parameters to icing conditions. The wind turbine blade aerodynamics and material must also be considered when quantifying the effects of icing.<BR>

The PhD project is part of the four-year Nordic R&D project IceWind <BR>

The project will be carried out in close cooperation with Vestas, and it is foreseen that the work will be done partially at Risø DTU and partially at Vestas Technology R&D centre in Aarhus. <BR>
