NG18 of the 2010 AGU Fall Meeting Session, entitled "<b>Non-Gaussian and non-linear Aspects of Data Assimilation and Predictability in the Geosciences</b>". A description of the session is included below.<br>
<br>
Session Description: Data assimilation (DA) and predictability are important areas of active research in the geosciences. Typically, the underlying dynamical models with these systems are non-linear and as such pose problems for both DA methods, that rely on
Gaussian assumptions, and for predictability or sensitivity studies that depend on linear relationships. The purpose of this session is to share ideas that address these aspects of DA and predictability. The areas of interest are: variational DA, ensemble
and extended Kalman filters, ensemble based and adjoint sensitivity, Monte Carlo methods, particle filters, Hamiltonian dynamics transforms and other techniques involved with nonlinearity in DA or predictability.
