If you want to get just pieces of it BEFORE downloading the entire file, try this web site:

http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/wesley/fast_downloading_grib.html

If you just need enough variables to run a land surface model, this is faster than downloaded all the multilevel met data and splitting it up.
But if the entire file is already downloaded, there is a utility called "wgrib" to view and slice GRIB files which you can find on the web or in your WRF directory: external/io_grib1/WGRIB/wgrib_main.c You can use information out of the VTables to help get the pertinent variable specifications.
if there is a way or a program that allows me to split a grib file into
different grib files containing just one parameter of the original
file???

Thanks
Roberto
