Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech University (TTU) invites applications
for a tenure-track position in Atmospheric Science to begin in Fall 2009. The
position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level; a Ph.D. in
Atmospheric Science is required at the time of appointment. The successful
candidate will possess research and teaching interests in the areas of
numerical weather prediction, and will establish an innovative, externally
funded academic research program. Expertise in mesoscale or storm-scale
modeling and/or data assimilation are also preferred, but not required. The
candidate will be expected to teach graduate courses in their specialty, direct
M.S. and Ph.D. student research, and assist with undergraduate courses in
Atmospheric Science. The successful candidate will be encouraged to engage in
various activities which could be regarded as service to his/her profession,
department, and TTU. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

has 19 tenured and tenure-track faculty members in all disciplines of earth and
atmospheric sciences. There are opportunities for multi-disciplinary
collaboration within and/or with other departments. <o:p></o:p></span></p>

describes the laboratories, facilities and current research programs in the
Department. TTU has assembled a unique array of observational capabilities
(e.g., Ka-band mobile Doppler radars, StickNet, and mobile mesonet facilities,
the 54-station West Texas Mesonet, and surface and tower-based instrument
suites based at the Wind Science and Engineering Research Center). Texas Tech
University’s High Performance Computing Center (<a
href="http://www.hpcc.ttu.edu">www.hpcc.ttu.edu</a>) provides computational
resources to TTU researchers. Its most recent Linux cluster (named Grendel) is
currently ranked 289 in the top 500 supercomputers. Given the availability of
ample computational and state-of-the-art observational resources, a new faculty
member in the area of numerical weather prediction would be well positioned to
make an immediate contribution to the research and operational community. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
