[Wrf-users] Vtable update for new GFS data

Dear Users,

I have a question related to the GFS data change and the new highest horizontal grid resolution data mentioned on the email below. It will be advisable to model with a finer grid resolution first domain to save computational resources or is not the case?

Let's say use a 9 km, 3 km, 1 km three domains nesting instead of a 27, km 9 km, 3 km, 1 km four domain nesting

Many thanks

Asunto: [Wrf-users] Vtable update for new GFS data

The GFS data files will be updated next month probably around 17 December 2014, with changes to the filenames and the addition of 0.25-degree-resolution data. See http://www.nws.noaa.gov/om/notification/tin14-46gfs.htm for the announcement. Most importantly for WRF users, the soil temperature representation within the grib2 file is being changed. From the announcement:

Rename TMP at 0-0.1 m, 0.1-0.4 m, 0.4-1.0 m, and 1-2 m to the more accurate name of Soil Temperature (TSOIL)

This will require a change to the Vtable.GFS file for the ungrib program to pick up the renamed fields. Based on testing of the parallel data that is currently being posted, here are the changes to the Vtable.GFS that you need to make:

>From the current Vtable.GFS .....
11 | 112 | 0 | 10 | ST000010 | K | T 0-10 cm below ground layer (Upper) | 0 | 0 | 0 | 106 |
11 | 112 | 10 | 40 | ST010040 | K | T 10-40 cm below ground layer (Upper) | 0 | 0 | 0 | 106 |
11 | 112 | 40 | 100 | ST040100 | K | T 40-100 cm below ground layer (Upper) | 0 | 0 | 0 | 106 |
11 | 112 | 100 | 200 | ST100200 | K | T 100-200 cm below ground layer (Bottom)| 0 | 0 | 0 | 106 |
11 | 112 | 10 | 200 | ST010200 | K | T 10-200 cm below ground layer (Bottom) | 0 | 0 | 0 | 106 |

The updated Vtable.GFS lines....
11 | 112 | 0 | 10 | ST000010 | K | T 0-10 cm below ground layer (Upper) | 2 | 0 | 2 | 106 |
11 | 112 | 10 | 40 | ST010040 | K | T 10-40 cm below ground layer (Upper) | 2 | 0 | 2 | 106 |
11 | 112 | 40 | 100 | ST040100 | K | T 40-100 cm below ground layer (Upper) | 2 | 0 | 2 | 106 |
11 | 112 | 100 | 200 | ST100200 | K | T 100-200 cm below ground layer (Bottom)| 2 | 0 | 2 | 106 |
11 | 112 | 10 | 200 | ST010200 | K | T 10-200 cm below ground layer (Bottom) | 0 | 0 | 2 | 106 |

The other lines in the should remain the same.

I've made a single test run with the new Vtable that appeared to complete successfully. Without this change, ungrib does not pick up the soil temperature and your WRF job may fail. Further testing by users is certainly called for using the parallel data being posted by NCEP before the new data goes operational next month.
