Met Office is developing high-resolution NWP models
along two closely related paths. The first is directed
at short range forecasting, where we expect most benefit
in the 12-36 h time frame in the UK domain. The second
is directed at Nowcasting, meaning frequently-updated
(generally hourly) 0-6 h forecasts. Both are based on
the Met Office Unified Model running at horizontal
resolution high enough to permit the development of deep
convection (1.5 km) but the different applications lead
to different emphases; it is essential that the
Nowcasting system produces an accurate small-scale
forecast at extremely short range, especially of
rainfall. <br>
</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style="font-size: 10pt;
font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">The
current model system uses variational data assimilation
and 3-hourly cycling. 1-hourly is being tested for
future use. The 1.5km resolution forecast system
produces 36 hour forecasts based on a 3km 3D-Var
analysis. In parallel a prototype NWP Nowcasting system
is being developed to produce hourly 7 hour forecasts
for southern England, also at 1.5km resolution using
4D-Var. These forecasts need to be produced rapidly and
to match the observations as closely as possible in the
early hours of the forecast. <br>

<p class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style="font-size: 10pt;
font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";">The
purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of
satellite data on these two NWP systems. The most
frequent satellite data is from SEVIRI which is
available every 15mins. Other data are available from
AMSUB radiances (8 times per day from 4 satellites) and
IASI twice daily.</span><span style="font-size: 10pt;"></span></p>
